Fall mushrooms
« on: Sep 06, 2020, 06:49 AM »
Took a cart cruise through the woods yesterday and was surprised to find several sheephead. Normally don't start finding them until October. Kept a couple for myself and cruised around town giving the rest to friends.

You only want to eat the outer soft edges. You can eat the inside but it's normally tough and woody. Very tasty mushroom with a chicken like texture.

Are those just edible or are they really good? How do you prepare them?

Hen of the woods!!! Now there is a mushroom worth bringing home.  Last year I got about 20 lbs one week. Just Sautee it in a litte butter and have it with anything. you can freeze it after cooking to save for later. It is great in scrambled eggs.

There is so many things you can do with both hen and chicken of the woods. Both are choice edible. Sautéed, breaded and fried, soup, stir fry. Or my favorite,  general tso mushrooms.

I went mushrooming with a buddy this morning.

We did pretty well - - we found 4 varieties: a few boletes, a 6 pound chicken of the woods, a good-sized cluster of oysters and some slippery jacks.

The last are primarily good for soups and gravies, while the others are a bit more versatile.
