Greenbacks
« on: May 18, 2005, 10:24 PM »
On My Fish Finder and Ice Shanty I have heard Manitoba anglers chatting about greenbacks they have caught. What area or river system in Manitoba has green back walleyes and how different is the green on the back compaired to a normal walleye? Why in those particular river or lakes do they have that color variation, is it diet, or genetics { different species of walleye}? They sure sound fun to catch and photograph.  ;D :)

The greenbacks come from lake Winnipeg. The red river and Winnipeg River systems are your best chances of getting one during their fall runs however I have caught some on the red during the month of may if the weather and water temp are still cool. I believe it is something in their diet that caused them to have that great green glow.

Here are a couple of typcal Red River greenbacks. AWs is 27" and the best I got that day was 24". Fall is the best time but many are caught at first ice and throughout the winter.

Where are you located WW?

Thanks for the info, bw. I wondered if there diet had something to do with it. :)
Duramax, I am in East Central Sask. Man those are colorful walleye, very good sizes to. Are all the walleye like that in those areas or just a select few? Thanks for the photos now I can see that there green is very different from you typical walleye, very neat fish indeed, You folks are lucky to have them. 8)

Hey WW  Just back from visiting cousins in Winnipeg and fished with one who lives on the river between Lockport and Selkirk.
Here is one of the nice Walleye we caught on sat.

Fun place to fish we caught burbot goldeye sauger and some decent pike as well. Going back in March for some ice fishing fun.

Hi anglerbrian,
Congrats on your greenback catch. That's a dandy sized walleye. 8)
How long or heavy was she?

Good work on the other species also. :)

Yeah, the Red River is has quite a few different fish species to choose from.

I hope to try that area myself some year, during the open water season.
I have never caught a channel cat or freshwater drum, so those two would be
my primary targets, but anything that will bite is always welcome. ;)
