How many guys fish for river smallies from shore, I have caught maybe two or three bass in my whole life on minnows but never on a lure. So can anyone give a rookie a couple pointers?

In the NorthEast here we kill the smallies from shore. Swimmers and jigs are good goto lures, but once it warms up I will do most of my river fishing at night with Jitterbugs 3/8 oz, (for small mouth) darker the night the better...
Good Luck!

I catch em from shore all the time using small crank baits and mepps spinners

I use jigs almost exclusively with allot of different colored twister tails my go to collore is peanutbutter and jelly. Look for Rockey shores, highways that run near a river will have allot of large rocks lining the shore to prevent erosion.

Thanks everyone for the info, I am probably going tonight and will use an orange jig with a minnow.

I do it all the time, i use my home crafted jigs with soft tails and some times adding a saftey pin type spinner . When it warms up i start wading using same setup. You will not only catch smallies but many other gamefish i have caught walleye sauger ,white bass, crappie, and largemouth.

NorthEast Rivers are killer for smallies, I grew up bass fishing on a boat. Now that my fathers moved away, I'm left to shoreline fish or kayak fish. It's a matter of where and when, that's pretty much the secret to catchin them. They'll bite on almost anything.
