Title: Oswego River - Steelhead
Post by: JWHORF on Oct 10, 2022, 07:02 PM
Hello All,
Looking to take a trip out to the Oswego River in a couple weeks (11/12) to try for some steelhead using beads under a float
I am looking for any local bead makers and recommendations on size and color.

Trying to buy local and avoid big chains.

Thanks

Not sure if this applies on the Oswego River, but it should.

Here is what Shane (Snagger) posted earlier on FB regarding the Salmon River -

"I got a bad feeling the DEC fucked something up 3 years ago with Steelhead stockings   Its now October 9th and I've yet to see a Steelhead come threw my fillet Station. None, not one fish.  Its never happened before.  Buckle up because it feels like somethings wrong."

Go over and read the responses.
A lot of them back his feeling, of course, some don't.

after the prior two years of awesome steelhead fishing in the lake in the eastern basin, this year was terrible.might have boated 4-5 steelhead all year,so i would expect to see the same results in the rivers.any of the tackle shops in pulsaki should be able to hook you up with anything you need to fish the rivers.

create an account.
it's simple
and if you don't want to be bothered, turn on/off the appropriate privacy settings

There is a huge amount of useful (and entertaining) info on FB.
Just like the WWW, use and view what you want and scroll past the stuff you don't want.

(like here on MFF too - lol)

Curious how one year can have such a drastic impact on the steelhead populations.  I think some years are better than other but I highly doubt this will be as bad a year for as some are saying.  It is awfully early for steelhead season and perhaps the drought conditions for most of the year has delayed their entrance into the river.  I'll be up that way the weekend before Thanksgiving but right now is really the transition time where salmon is slowing down and more steelhead should start to enter the river.  Never fished Oswego so can't really comment on that fishery specifically.

I have a few drift boat buds that guide , I’ll pass along what I hear on the salmon river  , plus there are guys on here that fish up my way , I’m sure they will make reports , after 35 + years s chasing after them and salmon I’ve lost that big urge , now it might be a time or 2 a season
Far as oswego trapp,  spends time there

Freddie, does the warmer water temps, in the lake, delay them from coming up river sooner? I know they like cooler water temps.

Current temp in the salmon res is 66*
I have seen salmon and steelhead run out of temp to that I’ll say yes
But is it the norm no
My favorite month for steelhead has always been November
In the past I’ve seen salmon run so out of temp that they croaked within a day or 2
Remember they are just a fish
But Shane is right normally cleaning stations should see some
But don’t worry they will show at some point and I believe guys will see some big ones

there are  no steelhead in oswego river......................

larrys salmon  shop  closed  and the  new shop closed too if you need   beads  i  suggest fat nancys  or  all seasons in pulsaki ......remember  to wear a life jacket in oswego river

fred is  right  prime  time  to steelhead  fish  "usually"  is  opening week of  gun season ......fish are in, salmon  fishing is  calming down, and water is cooling.......

My first experience was negative on Facebook and I closed my account. Then my wife showed me how easy it is to block all the idiots that just want negative drama and post nasty politics. I think I ended up blocking about 70 people.  :rotflol: Now I enjoy the humor and memes with my early morning coffee, and touching bases with friends I don't see in person often due to the distances. And I've even created a local inland trout lakes page and a small scale aquaculture page.

According to social media the steelhead have arrived in good numbers in the salmon river.  I don't really pay much attention to Oswego but I'm hoping that with a good run of kings this year the same should be true for steelhead.  Time will tell.

According to social media, must be taken with a grain or two of salt.
I went up today after reading the same post. I saw one steelhead hooked and lost and talked with one fisherman that caught a 6 or 7 pounder.
One fisherman told me that yesterday it was on fire up there. But that is always the case when I go up. Should have been here yesterday.
I will be back after I get some venison in the freezer.

Yeah sounds like things are picking up.  I'm hoping for a little rain in the coming week and I think the cooler temps should help pick things up.  Things are hopefully lining up good for my trip.

The snow and bump in the flow made things a struggle but after breaking off 3 fish I finally got some steel to hand.
