Title: Tough day for my son - off topic
Post by: Johnnh on Dec 13, 2022, 05:12 AM
My son Charlie is building a horse barn at home and had a bad accident yesterday.
He was staning up a framed wall 30'x10' when a brace kicked out and the wall fell on him, pinning him to the concrete floor.
He spent the rest of the day at the ER and is doing fairly well considering he is bruised up and the dealing with the BAD news = he broke his back.
I am heading back to the hospital to see him this morning

Prayers sent.  I do know of someone that broke his back falling off a roof and made a complete recovery as far as I know.

My son is now at home. Tests show fracture of T12. He is in a back brace from hips to arm pits. His chest and back are world class black and blue. He will be visiting the spinal doctors weekly to monitor his progress. The doctors feel he has a good chance of full recovery. The initial phase should produce results within 90 days. My sons boss is giving him all sorts of recovery time. My son is the supervisor of the Brontasaurice product manufacturing at Browns Forestry Services. Thats those machines used to shred trees on roadsides and utility right of ways.

Heres an example of great people: This saturday and sunday a group of guys from his work place, a few lineman from a local IBEW power company,  several friends and his girlfriends family are going to build his barn for him.

I wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and kindness during the trying times my son is going through.

Update on my son.
Still has the brace. They have him on muscle relaxers and pain meds.
Therapy is starting and the have not ruled out surgery. He showed me the xrays and his back is a mess.

Not much worse than severe back pain. I’m sure his life has come to a screeching halt. I sincerely hope he gets past this quickly.

Heading over to my son's house for Christmas lunch today. He is getting better every day. His girlfriend took him to the doctors yesterday and they told him he can go back to work in about 3 weeks with no lifting.

I wanted to thank everyone for all the kind words and prayers. This is a special time for our family: My son is on the mend.

Merry Christmas everyone
John

That’s terrible news and predicament !
It sounds like he’s a strong hard worker, and tough. Take it from me if he’s determined he will recover fully and be his old self again!
Take it from someone from the same mold. 2 broken backs and a broken neck with 2 cervex inserts ( instead of fusion) and still going at it at 62.
Whatever he does do not let them do any fusions of his vertebrae . I had to fight and had the right doctor. Fusion is just the first step to a straight rod for a spine with no mobility.
Best of luck to him and the whole family. If you need a spinal MD who is second to none I can send you in the right direction. Dr Anthony Salerni is the Dr other Drs go to to have work done on them personally. Prayers!!

UPDATE
My son is doing well. Doctor removed the brace and he is clear to go back to light duty work a week from now.

We spent a few hours sitting by my wood stove yesterday and he is excited to go back to work and put an end to the boring times just sitting around at home.

Thanks again for all your kindness and prayers

John
