Query for you lake trout gurus
« on: Oct 18, 2011, 10:48 PM »
I'm a fair laker taker, but here in MT, we have 2 big fishing tourneys a year for lake trout.
The top guns are slaying in the 50-80 fish /per day range.
I have raised my bar from and average of 5 per day last spring to 16-17/ day this fall.
Dont seem to be able to figure out what to do to make further improvements.

'We are 90% of the time jigging. anywhere from 120 -300 feet.
Typical lures are vertical jigs, grub style jigs ( lead head, soft body & tail)
both tipped with cut bait and various scents depending on what they want that day.

Anybody got an secret tips to help us get to the next level? We sat 75 feet from one of the
"big dogs" last weekend, we did about normal, this guy was dragging them in one after the other for about 85 fish.
He wasn't talkin' >:(
I could see the basic shape, size and color of the lure he was using , 'bout like what we use.

Just a thought... what kinda tackle was he using? did you run over the area he was in with a GPS and sonar? Might be some structure he located at a specific coordinate.  I found a few sunken church steeples and the like on a lake I fished years ago, it was a laker gold mine!
