Rudd On The Fly
« on: Apr 14, 2021, 11:53 AM »
Had a ball this morning catching Rudd on the fly rod.
Hers just a few.

My “Clump Of Spikes” was the ticket. Figured I better tie some more. Lost a couple before I went to 8 lb tippet.

Fun stuff

I used to complain about them when I was looking for gills and sunnies. Man they’re fun on the fly.

Where did you run into them Dom? I wasn’t sure what waters they were in.

They’re an invasive. I bought them as red fin shiners way back when for bait.

Clump of spikes flies.  I've seen it all now.  That's awesome.

I actually first tied that for ice fishing. It worked.
The Rudd are a pain when pan fishing with waxworms, so I thought...why not! It worked again.

Next time I’ll take the 10’ 6 wt to get a bit more distance.

Will they take waxworms?
When they’re in I can’t keep them off my line if I’m trying to get gills. I tried the clump fly in green and they wouldn’t touch it. I tried PT, caddis, and several wet flies and the only one they’d hit was the clump of spikes. I’m going to try a couple waxworm patterns on them and see if they’ll take those. There’s one I used to tie using a strip white latex glove  over a built up body on a scud hook. I have to wonder if white is the trigger.

This might be an interesting way to catch goldens too assuming the clump of spikes fly was downsized a bit.

It’s not big at all. I tie them on a TMC 100 #10.

I was at the inlet on Conesus last week.  Must have been 10,000 rudd of all sizes up there.  I don't know if they're spawning or following the northerns and walleyes to eat the eggs as they're dropped?  I've caught big ones in Silver, Conesus, Canandaigua, and West River.
Bigger isn't always better but Size definitely Matters!

Ya unfortunately they are in conesus super thick.     Seems every yr I see them more and more    Sucks.   I only see them in the spring.    Then not again til next spring    But either way, they’re are a ton of them.   And big ones.
