Crappie Fishing Techniques
« on: Mar 05, 2004, 06:10 AM »
Boy this subject line could be taken a number of ways ;D

Anyways, here's my favorite way to cover water and find crappies.

Ever try trolling for them?
2 long, light action rods, bobber, jig/minnow combination on a 2' to 8' leader.

Troll with your electric motor  in a zig-zag pattern with varying speed.

Thats a great idea will have to try that.

I usually just fish jigs with spikes, jigs with minnows, jigs with minnow heads only, jigs with waxworms, with a bobber, without a bobber.

that would probably work pretty good once the water warms up a bit.
on chautauqua lake where i do the majority of my crappie fishing, the fish won't move far to chase a bait in the early spring--sometimes the best technique is to cast out a tube jig 2' under a float and just let it sit there barely moving with the waves

They call that a spider rig and it works good where it is leagle. A 2 man team with 8 or 10 rods trolling. Your ''outside rods'' will be about 20 footers and then the others are progressvivly shorter. Good fof location and productive fishing. :)

I use a small mister twister or like lure with an 1/8 oz jig head and troll in zig-zig pattern. It works to find them also.

I think my favorite technique is with the fly rod and popper during the summer. From about 1/2 hr before dusk the crappies drive baitfish up on a rockslide point that goes from about 3' to 28' deep. I wade out and cast a small popper over the edge of the drop and start working it. I can usually catch about a dozen crappies this way and talk about fun on a 1 weight outfit !  ;)

i love to use small jig heads with mister twisters or a 1-1 1/2 inch tube. or if the bite is slow hook with small minnow under a bobber.
notin better than a perch on the end of my line!

rgfixit is got the right idea, as long as your using a stick bobber and not a slip bobber, and as for the jig, you can't go wrong with a red 1/64 oz jig head with a chartuse mister twister body.  From the shore casting bobbers work well given the extra weight to cover more area.  Never heard of catching crappie with a fly rod but in does sound like a blast.

We almost always use 1.5" tubes with waxies, drift and just pump the jig along to maintain depth. It allows you to cover alot of water. Night time lights, tubes and jigs and minnows.

Few questions if you wouldn't mind :)? What's a split shot rig? Lunker City Fin S Shad? Never heard of them. Do they have a website or is there a place online I can check them out?

Almost forgot,

Does anyone use two baits/jigs tied to one line or does that spook'em?
Harold
