Are there Edible Catfish in NY?
« on: Mar 27, 2010, 05:22 PM »
So, I was just wondering how many you guys out there catch cats from waters that you would be willing to actually eat something from in NY.  By and large I only have gotten  a sizeable cat in the hudson river.  It seems in order to get into any serious catfish (numbers and size) you gotta fish waters you wouldn't necessarily wanna be eatin from.

Lake Champlain and the Champlain canal hold quite a few cats. I've eaten a ton of them over the years. I seem to be fine, but some may beg to differ. :)

i have tried cats from champlain a few times and they literally smelled and tasted like the weeds in the lake. am i cleaning or cooking them wrong? or maybe they were too big or from the wrong time of the season. any thoughts?

I'm no expert, but they definitely taste better early in the open water season. I ate a few this year that a buddy of mine caught through the ice that were superb. Smaller cats are also a lot better to eat. Just like most species.
