coolers in bear contry
« on: Aug 23, 2010, 02:35 PM »
I canoe with coolers form time to time in bear country
I will bring a hard side. I have put them up as a bear bag
at times just left them out. I was thinking of getting two ratchet
straps and locking them down and leave them out with my bear Cans.

I use a bear can most times and some times a bear bag set up
I know they make a Yeti cooler that is bear proof but don't want to pay the price of one

What do you think of ratchet straps? What do you folks do with coolers in the back country.

Just saw this.  I would try the ratchet straps with some sort of lock to keep the release from being tripped if Mr. Bear decides to knock the cooler around.

An enterprising bear will find his way into anything you rig up .....  there is a bear in the Adirondacks that can even get into a couple brands of the "bear proof canisters"  .....  just make sure you keep it well away from you and don't put anything in it you really need for the trip.
