Yeah, a small pencil bobber won't work too well for 8 inch pike shiners...you've got to match the float to the application.

i don't normally use them but like the smallest phantom bobbers they sell if i do.

Thill Gold Medalist.  This line of slip floats is my favorite because there is a one for every situation.

 I have a light bobber that has a light in it for night fishing. Sometimes.

I like to use top notch floats if you can find them. They are made in our area . I can get you the contact info if you'd like.

take a look at the floats made by Drennan, i have been using them to good effect for pike and walleye from my dock, but like some of the other replies they make one that wpould suit most situations
