New GPS/Finder for the Lund
« on: Jan 28, 2016, 10:40 AM »
Just ordered a Lowrance HDS-8 Insight 83/200. The stupid price of $649 made me pull the trigger. Refurbished by Lowrance but they provide the same standard warranty. I will move the HDS-5 up front on the bow and connect it to the transducer on the Terrova. Both units use the same power cord and transducer, so install will be easy. No wires to run or new holes to drill in the transom.

Wondering about networking them together. Have an email sent to Lowrance. We'll see what they come up with. Would be cool to be able to toggle between either transducer on either unit maybe.

Just the new HDS-8 fish finder.
Of course it's a discontinued model.
So not really new.
Just new to me.

The rest of the rig is already 3-4 years old.

Always wanted to do that.
I've seen 100's of these videos over the years.
Pretty cool.

It's official.
Just spoke to Rich, the guy that owns the storage barn where I keep my boat during the winter months.
Made arrangements to go and get it Saturday morning about 10am.
Afterwards, I'll swing by our place on Lake Erie and pick up the gear and other items I need in it.
I want to do some fishing in Lake Ontario for browns with my sons.
My garage at home is large and heated.
So I'll be able to work on it during the week to get it ready to go the following Saturday and Sunday with Jeff and Chris.
The new HDS-8 goes in on the dash and the HDS-5 gets moved from the dash up front.
I have a few other things to do also.
Tattle tail flags on the in-line boards, check rods and line, etc.
Can't wait.
Love tinkering with my boat.

Well...........it's still out there in storage.
For some reason Rich moved my boat away from the door where we put it last Fall.
Moved it WAY back in the storage facility.
Way back.
Behind a motor home and a huge camper and 2 large boats.
***censored****?!?!?!
Rich!!!!!

He said it musta been his brother who moved my boat.
To make room or something.
It's a 16.5' boat for crying out loud!!!
How much room did he need??
 ::)

Anyway, after 1000 apologies, Rich said he would work this week to empty things and get my boat toward the front so I can pick it up next Saturday.

Fudge!

So we drove over to our place on Erie and picked up some of the boat things to save some time next week.
Stopped at the VFW and had a burger and a beer for lunch.
Good stuff.

Got it today.
It's home in the garage.
Hooked up the 3 batteries and plugged in the on-board charger.
Even turned the furnace on out there and set the T-stat for 65 degrees.
Nothing but the best for my baby.
 8)

I'm feeling much better now.

Tomorrow the new HDS-8 gets installed and the HDS-5 gets moved up front.
Might even through some ribs on the grill Bob.
 ;D

Jacked each wheel off the ground and checked the wheel bearings on the trailer.

They were good.

I shot the bearing buddies in the Fall, so they don't need re-squirting just yet.

Soaked the cover with a waterproofing product to reseal it.
Then read the can.
24-48 hours drying time.
So I have to leave the cover on the boat for a day.
 :cursing:

I wanted to get to work on the new finder and moving the older one up front, ethernet cable, etc.
Oh well.
Got the other 2 planer board flags installed.
Also worked on a couple rod holders.

After work tomorrow night the cover will be dry so I can pull it off the boat and get started on the fish finders.

Got the ram mount and HDS-8 mounted.
Need to get a few more stainless steel fasteners tomorrow to complete the job right.
checked out the Navionics Plus chip.
Not bad.
Will be good especially up in northern Ontario Canada where the Lowrance doesn't have any mapping.

Tomorrow night the HDS-5 goes on the bow.
Then the fun starts.
Fishing wires up to it.
Not easy in a Lund.

I thought this might be of interest to some of you out there.
I have always found it overwhelming to try and learn all of the features of newer combo depth finders and GPS units these days.
Many years ago, during the Loran days of the 70's and early 80's, I owned one of the first combo units, an Impulse.
Great unit and boy was it user friendly.
Since then these things have really advanced and gotten way more features; and in the process, they have become really confusing on how to use.
At least to me.
 ;)

Anyway, my son Jeff suggested that I fire that new HDS-8 up in the house at my desk.
We had an extra power cord that I bought so he could hook up his old HDS-5 1st Gen in a soft bag to use ice fishing.
Donna and I bought him the large soft bag for xmas this past year.
We also have a few of those small 9AH gell cell batteries.
So I did this Sunday after we got back from Lake Ontario.

Wow!
This allowed me to learn my new Navionics Plus card I bought.
I also took the opportunity to updated the software in the unit.
Something I knew needed doing but for some reason I never did.

Afterwards, I noticed the thing was showing the location of the unit as being at my home address.
***censored****?!?!?!?    :o
I looked and sure enough, it had acquired signals of the satellites.
Inside my house!!!
A 2-story house and the unit is on the ground floor.
So this thing is shooting through the floor above my head, the ceiling of the 2nd floor above that, and then thru the attic and the roof above that.
WOH!!!   :o
I was floored.

This was way cool as it now allowed me to really play with things.
I was able to do some waypoint work.
For the past 4-5 years I had always struggled at using waypoints on these newer units.
I could save them and label them.
No problem.
And I could navigate to one.
But not by using the unit's "go to" feature.
Not like I did many years ago on my old Impulse, which was very user friendly to operate.

I would simply watch the map and steer toward the waypoint on the map.
As I got closer, I would continue zooming in until I was "kinda" there.
I now have figured out how to do an actual "go to" using the unit like you are supposed to.
I also setup the Info screen the way I want it to look and now know how to access it and also set up the unit to show it as another window when I want to.

I suppose I could have always sat in my boat and done all this.
And I have always said, "I need to do that".
But the only time I was ever in the boat was out on the lake fishing.
Try learning these things out there, without the 2000 page manual.
(Even if you did have the manual - it would be difficult)

Doing it at my desk also allowed me to access the tons of Youtube videos that demonstrated a lot of the features and how to use them.

Anyway, last night I thanks Jeff for like the 2nd time.
And sitting here during my lunch today I decided to make this post for some of you out there that might be struggling like I was to learn their unit.

That power cord was like $25-30.
Not cheap.  It's a friggen power cord for crying out loud!!!
We justified it by being able set up that old Gen 1 HDS-5 unit as an ice machine.
But I think that with what I was able to accomplish and learn in the last 2 nights easily justifies the cost of that cable.
Also the small gell cell battery.

Good luck.

Yeah, the GloNass GPS units are pretty amazing these days. You really don't have to have to be outside to have them lock.
