But don't kid yourself, there's a very decent resident population of eyes at this end.

Now you've gone and ruined it!
SPOILER ALERT!!!! >:(
I know the resident population is decent, you simply can't target them, and from my experience,  the day bite is a very tough bite early may (usually night bite is good)

Not really sure why you think you cannot target them in May.
Everyone who fishes for them does.
They are typically shallower in May, say than they are a month or so later.
They spend time up shallow feeding at night and then slide out a little deeper during the day to escape the sunlight and hug the bottom.
As the days get longer, the sun gets higher in the sky (and brighter), they slide out to deeper water...........as does the bait.
They follow the bait and set up the summer patterns.
You can then still find them shallow at night too in the summer.
Guy around Buffalo and Hoaks prove this all year.

One of the largest eyes I caught was right on the bottom off Smokes Creek in about 20-25 FOW and it was early afternoon.
Got it drifting a worm harness right on the bottom slooooowly.

They are there.
And you can certainly target them.

That wasn't meant for the may bite.. I know you can target them in may. You can't target them in april..
This post was meant to get some Intel for the Ohio bite in april since I can't fish them closer to home..
Might possibly just stay home and go fish perch beds..

I say stay around there cause it wIll save Gas money for one and I am sure the perch bite is awesome there as it is here right now.. were targeting marings and rivers for perch they seem to be spawning??  Or attempting to?? Some of the reports I seen were in prime walleye water..up in the river close to the damns.. but that way your saving cash on licence ,gas, gear ,etc.. there getting done nice ones like 9 to 13 inchers.. noting below 9 inches kept at a few spots I seen..

Now if you do go to ohio a lot of guys fish the maumee river by me so regs are different then the great Lakes in michigan I think your allowed 2 fish were on staint clair river the limit is 6 fish 13 inch min size were maumee river is way different. . Also you got to use floating jig heads and etc were st clair river you can use lead in ounces or pounds but for sure PAY attention to the regs so you don't get stung with fines..

Now I feel silly.
Sorry.
Misinterpreted what you said.
Gotcha - eyes are closed from March 15th thru May 1st in NY - reason they cannot be targeted.

My goal this 2017 season is to catch a eye 8+lb on "light tackle". Spinning reel 7ft med rod..
I've caught lots of eyes that range or bigger on trolling rods and dipsys ect... I want one on my jigging rod!!!
That's why I'm looking at Ohio waters

Try night fishing on Meyers Reef with a jig.
Just drift the reef.
If it's dead calm use an electric trolling motor to creep along.
Every year I try to get out there and do this at least once.
Meyers is an easy ride from Sturgeon Point.

I've been on the reef several times just not at night. You're right it's not that far away. Really not that far from SBH either.

The ride from SBH is a bit of a ways.
We do it from Point Breeze to the windmills once or twice a season if things are hot.
But I typically prefer not to run that far.
You might try Seneca Shoals or Woodlawn Bar if you are launching at SBH.

Here's a link to a pretty simple map of this end of the lake.

BTW, I was referring to Evans Bar in my earlier post, although Meyers will work too.
