Today my girlfriend and I went out on the boat to self quarantine in what was supposed to be some nice weather. The weather ended up being windy with a few snow flurries and breaking sunlight every once in a while. The plan was to troll for rainbows, relax, and maybe catch some dinner. I’d been out fishing for lake trout a couple times and they’ve kicked my butt, along with being burnt out on fishing for them!
We had 2 pop hear rigs back down 10 and 15 feet and 2 crank baits on planer boards trying to figure out what the fish wanted. After a couple hours one of the planers finally got crushed. It was obvious early that it was a big fish and I mentioned it had to’ve been a lake trout but I wasn’t sure if we didn’t hook into a big brown. He was the inside run and ran all the way to the outside as I tried like crazy to clear lines, downriggers, slow the motor, etc. It was a full on rodeo as I got everything cleared and out of the way while my girlfriend battled this fish on 8 lb test line. She was ECSTATIC, jumping up and down when we got it in the net! It came in just under 19 lbs on the scale.
