Garmin Echomap SV
« on: Feb 18, 2023, 07:51 AM »
I was thinking about buying one of these units. Probably the 7” screen to better fit on my boat. I am particularly interested in the sideview capability.  I wonder if it’s worth it for the fingerlakes panfishing that I do.  Anyone have any experience with sideview?  I presently have a raymarine dragonfly 5 and it’s ok. Just thinking of another excuse to throw away money ;D

I don't have Garmin experience.
Mostly Lowrance, and some HB.
If I was younger, and wanted to relearn these units, I would probably switch to HB.
So I stay with Lowrance because of familiarity.
I have heard good things of Garmin though.

I can comment on screen size though.
Go with the largest you can afford, and then go even larger.
If I could fit it, I would mount my 86" tv on my boat.  lol
Back 15-20 yrs ago I had a 5" unit and thought it was great.
Then got a 7".........wow!
Then I went with a pair of 8's on my Trophy.
Sweet!!!!
Now I have a 10" unit linked to two 8's and wish I had gone with all 10" units, or even all 12" units.

The console size restricts me to 7”, but I am more interested in checking out sideview. The Garmin I used the other day was 9”. It was way better than the lowrance hd7 I used the day after that.

Can you go larger with a RAM mount?
See the setup on my toon photos attached.
The one on the left is an 8 and the one on the right is a 10.

And yea, Lowrance has good mapping, but their sonar is not as good as Garmin or Bird.
The new Live units are better, still.......

I really can’t with the cockpit windshield and overall size of the cockpit. I could have used a ram mount on the gunnel like a friend has on his tracker but ultimately bought the 7”.  It will work well enough for me. I even thought about setting up two units like you have. Maybe I should just buy a bigger boat  ;D

I bought the Echomap 73 SV a couple of years ago and I love it! I fish the Hudson and lakes in Saratoga and the surrounding area, as well as some Adirondack lakes, and the sideview is amazing for both. Especially as I enter the mouths of large bays with rock piles all over the place. Also use it at night to look for rip rap that cats may be hiding under.

The deeper the water, the wider the side view.

Now that I have it, I cannot imagine ever being without it.
