Wood Turtle?
« on: May 25, 2009, 11:09 AM »
I was doing some trout fishing this morning on a stretch of the Catskill Creek, and happened upon this little fellow. I was not sure what species he was, but after a little research, I came up with Wood Turtle, which are apparently quite uncommon in NYS. Can anyone here confirm my ID?

Have a good Memorial Day! :flag:

Not 100% sure but it looks like an eastern box turtle to me. There color patterns vary quite a bit from the color of the one you showed to dark black with very pronounced yellow markings. The only reason i say box turtle is becasue 95% of the wood turtles i have seen dont have a smooth shell, there shell is more similar to a tortoise while a box turtle has a smooth shell.

I know it isn't a Box Turtle, and its shell was actually raised a bit, the photo just didn't show that too well.

Definately a Wood Turtle. The bright orange on the legs is a good identifying characteristic.
