Post and Beam
« on: Jul 10, 2006, 09:29 PM »
Here are a few pics of a post and beam building that my brother put up the other day. Both he and I have been working on it for a while now. I drew up the plans and we both layed out the beams, rafters etc. I was able to plot full size templates of the radiused pieces. This style of truss is called a hammer truss. We've never built this style before. He cut all the lumber on a portable sawmill. It was all volunteer work for the historical society. It will be a working sugar shack.

Here's a few pics.

There must be a few of you guys out there that have done this type of work.

It took about a year to get all the timbers layed out. It was weekend work only and my brother did most of it. He works four 10 hour days and has 3 day weekends. I wasn't there for the standing of the building, but he had a good crew along with a crane. They put it up in one weekend. We still have to put some nailers in along the eaves and a few other places. This is about as far as we have to go with it. There's another crew to do the boarding and roofing. We built a carriage shed a couple of years ago. I'll try to get some pics of that also. I like the look of the post and beam constrution, but can't devote the time that my bro does to these projects.

That's really beautiful!  I'd be happy for you, but I'm too busy being envious. ;)

Very nice! It's a great feeling to stand back and say- "We did that!"
I have been involved with projects that were similar, but not as intricate.
Those arches are truly amazing.
Kudos!  :clapping:

Thanks for all of the positive comments. It is a big building for a sugar shack billybono, but they will be selling a lot of product in there during fair time - it's located on the Windsor fair grounds. One of the members of the historical society (a doctor) bought a hand held band saw to make the arches - it worked great.

If any of you guys are in Windsor during fair time - Aug. 28th thru Sept. 4 - make sure you stop in and go thru the museum. They have a working blacksmith forge also. Some of the guys are real talented, it's amazing what they can do with a piece of iron.
