Ferry Tales.
« on: Aug 03, 2007, 10:29 PM »
Son and I decide to head to the pacific ocean for a little fun.
After a night shift I drive 6 hours to Terrace and get a room for the night. We wake in the am to this view

After a quick A&W breakfast we head onto Prince Rupert. Lots of great scenery along the Skeena river

Launch my 13ft inflatable and head to an island 21 miles out. Set up camp and get ready to fish...

1st day we C&R lots of salmon.

The big ferry going to Queen Charlotte Islands goes by and sends a big wake out

After a day of fishing Devon got to run the Ferry of our own. We tied our inflatable up to anchor ball and he paddled in the blow up small dinghy. The next morning back out with small dinghy to bring the bigger inflatable in.

Decide to fish for some halibut...So we collect some bait

Well this guy was a little ugly so we passed on him

Cut up a nice rock fish

Put the rod in holder and wait for the bite

1st one is a 49.5 lber.

Then some smaller ones

Always lots to see and explore on the shore

LOOK MA NO LEGS :D

No trip to the ocean is complete unless you have a crab feast :P

Nice report TGF!  Bet not too many people know what kind of salmon you were catching ;)  I just hauled the boat out and am on my way back through your neck of the woods tomorrow.  Nows your chance to get me on the halibut 8)  Nice pics and it looks like the weather was ok too!

Right on bud. I will have some cold refreshments when you arrive :P

Weather was only ok one day then it rained/misted every day for the next 5. But that is to be expected for there.

Wow, great job Terry!!!! 21 miles out in a rubber raft is CRAZY....but man does that ever look like a blast!!  Judging by the purple/green markings on the salmon, I'd say they're chum salmon, correct? ;) Great fish and story as usual!

The one that I'm holding was a chum/dog salmon. He went right back in the water after a quick photo. The one my son is holding is not ;)

PS: Its really not that bad that far out as we fish around an island so always calm water somewhere. We travel across the straight only in the early am around 6 and it can get huge waves in the afternoon. I have seen them as high as 17 feet but not when I was in my boat. You need the power to keep with the waves.
When we returned from that trip the comercial fishermen were out and we got a few looks from them and one guy just shook his head. I do know what my boat will handle and would turn back if it was bad. But this time the chop was only 2 feet so all was OK.
