Actually a kipe is fish related, it is a basket for catching fish, also slang for stealing. 8)

You are correct, but it was originally spelled 'kipe'. The modern accepted spelling is due to a mispelling propogated by Francis Day an icthyologist in the 1800's. He is also the same guy who propogated the now accepted misspelling of char for the original 'charr' see the journal Copeia.
