Suddenly Stripers...
« on: Jul 23, 2014, 05:26 PM »
Decent stripers had been eluding us in Long Island Sound  :'( until the night of the super moon on July 11th. Incredibly, we finally caught our first two keepers of the year :D, only about a month and a half late. We only had 5 fish, but the keepers were 20 and 32 pounds.

We returned to one of our favorite spots Monday night and hit the jackpot  ;D. Trolling tube and Gulp worms at dusk produced several fish, including my largest T&W striper at 34#. Sadly, no photo. As it grew darker we switched to casting and drifting live eels with some incredible action. We finished the night with 1 gigantic bluefish and 15 stripers including my buddy's 32 pounder. Only 2 fish were under 20 pounds. Still lookin' for that 50...

We kept two deeply hooked fish for the grill and painstakingly revived and released the rest. Not too many pics were taken as we were trying to get the fish right back in the water. I didn't mind it when I was young, but that hour and 20 minute drive home towing a boat at 3:00 AM really sucks >:(!

First fish of the nite. 22#.

Kenny's 32#.

Tube and worm.

Revival.

Sounds like you had a heck of a night.  I'm sure those are going to make for some nice meals as well.

I usually put a little bling ahead of the tube, but not always. I've had good luck with the copper willowleafs, but that might just be coincidence.
And any color tube works, as long as it's red  ;D.

Never hung him on the scale, just cut the hook off next to the boat. But he was big!

  • If it was easy they would call it catching.

The spinner is nice because you can feel it through the rod. If you pic up weeds you know right away.
The problem with is spinners is they tend to pick up more weeds than just a plain tube.
