Just trying to get an idea of what some of you think of scents and attractants .
I have used Baitmate , Baitmate max , Yum and several other gimmicks on my baits and lures . I would like to think some of them do work under certain applications but havent ever had a day where it made such a difference that I could firmly say it was because of the scent I chose to use .
How about you?

I think that it could help ya out some. At least turn some of the non-biters and feeders to hit.
Sound, vibration, smell, color are all part on the fish biting puzzle. ;)
-
I've heard good things about those "fish-attractants". :)
-
I've experimented with scents and such on bass, and I just don't think it helps at all - for bass. Now for walleyes on the other hand, it is amazing what a 1/2" piece of nightcrawler will do for the bite.

now D-man, don't be giving away the secret ;)

And back to the reason why my tacklebox wreaks of garlic....lol
Works great for walleye, but only in one spot that we tried it. The other spots we tried it, it produced nadda!

I have used scents since the 80's and have caught fish while my friend didn't until he used a squirt.
It may be just a confidence thing, but I always use scent on soft plastics.

I like Stetson myself. Gets the fur a coming ;) if you know what I mean ;D
-
i've used scent while jigging for eyes in the rivers when the water is really dirty. i'll take my minnies and cover them really good and have had days where my fishing partner ( refuses to use) doesn't get a hit and i'm catching fish. might or might not be the scent but it works for me. never use it for anything else. except for the catfish bait.
-
i dont find that i get more fish bitting..i find i get more fish holding on..thus meaning more time to set the hook..more solid hook sets...MORE FISH. i dont count on it to lure them in...just to make them taste it for a tiny second longer.
-
That's a good point, fs!
Every second counts.
-
Two words - SMELLY JELLY.
-
never had much luck with scents
-
For me Scents are exactly like red hooks, i have no idea wether or not they work, but I use them because it cant hurt...
I carry 3....(no including pre-scented lures)
1) BANG Garlic Spray (I use it on plastics
2) MEGA Stike ( I squeeze this into tubes)
3) Scent-a-Strike (perfect for using on cranks, no mess)

why? its oil based, so it floats and evaporates. not anymore harm than a 2 cyle outboard

I don't use applied scents that often but I do, use scented baits quite a bit. It seems it varies from day to day and lake to lake what scent the fish like but it can't hurt and it mask the human scent. Fish tend to hold onto the scented lures longer.
I have had good luck using anise scent.

i have been known to use a WD40 soaked sponge for catfish..dont laugh it works well..also old fashioned ivory soap...try them one time when you have nothing esle better to do..i have had plenty of nights when the rod with the soap gets smoked much more then the rod with liver.
-
Never heard of the ivory soap thing until I moved here . I hear it a lot now .
How do you rig it and do you just use it for cats and bullheads ?
That I would like to try some time .
-
usually cut off a small square. about 1x1...tie it in a spawn bag...i know some people cut a whole chunk and just stick the hook thru it..ive tried but if it sits for to long it gets soggy and just falls off.
-
It floats, too, doesn't it?
-
yes..its actually perfect for bottom rigs.
-
I like the Bang crayfish spray when I use soft plastic, I only bother with it in MURKY water though.
WD-40 is awesome stuff, I spray it down the throats of dead bluegills shiners etc. when fishing for catfish.
I tried the ivory soap trick once too, it worked, but not better then a dead shad.
