Help with water pump on 6HP Evinrude
« on: Jun 09, 2012, 06:16 PM »
Picked up a '75 6HP Evinrude Model 6504. Nice clean motor but want to change out the water pump. I can't get the lower end to drop off seems to be hanging up and I don't want to mess with the head, Any help would be appreciated.

I got the book sitting here, and one of the steps to remove the gear case is shifting the gear case into forward. It says you may need to move the prop to get it to shift. It was very specific about this.

Try that, if that does not work, I can read some more.

I have the Clymer for 2-40 hp 1973-1990.

Thanks Gents, I'll give it a try. If all else fails, I'll bring it to a shop and have to work some OT !!!

There is a shift linkage that needs to be disconnected. It is either accessed through a little port about midway down the exhaust housing or it may be at the split between the exhaust housing and the lower unit. You'll need to remove the bolts and put the gear shift in reverse to be able to remove the screw from the linkage. See diagram here.

If, after this is done and it still won't come apart, it may be because the driveshaft is rusted into the crankshaft. If so, flip the motor upside down and spray the driveshaft with PB Blaster or some Silikroil liberally to let it run down the shaft and seep into where the shaft's splines go into the powerhead. Let that sit overnight, then you may still need to pry it loose with bars and wedges. It is fairly common for those motors to get stuck together at that point.

Huckleberry,
That video has the side port on the 40HP motor. The 6HP motors came in 3 different arrangements depending on year of manufacture.
1:
You had to take the powerhead off to get at a pin to disconnect the linkage
2:
There was the small plate which as in your video is ~midway on the lower 'leg'
3:
You had to remove the bolts and put the shifter in gear to lower the gearcase enough to expose the linkage in the now opening so you can remove the bolt to remove it fully

I think that particular year as per my link is #3

Yeah, that's why I only said the vid might help.

I know the motor in the vid is a different size and probably a different year, but hey... it was worth a shot, was just trying to help.

I'm sure the OP's best help would be to buy a repair manual for that motor... lots easier to look at an exploded diagram than it is to try to have someone explain it to you in words and type.

try this site. I have the exact same motor. I bought it new in 76 and have only replaced the plug once in all these years. not 1 other problem with this motor. it is bullet-proof.

Looks like you need to disconnect the shift linkage at parts 58,59, and 60.

That's ok, it livens the place up a little... lord knows this board needs all the action it can get. 8)
