I stumbled upon it down in Florida while in a fly shop down there.  It is self adhesive elastic  'gummy-like' tape.  It comes in different colors and sheens...but mostly metalica as it is most often used for minnow immitations.  Has some great reflective qualities to it.  It's claim to fame is the 'Gummy Minnow' pattern....

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I sent a photo of my crappie fly to a friend who has fished for them for a long time.  He said nice, but from his experience they really like red & black colors.  So, I tried again - black rabbit w/Krystal Flash tail, plastic bead chain eyes, red hackle & Flashabou body

Nice! I like anything with some flash, slow dropping and some pink in it for Crappie. You'll have a bag of new goodies to play with in a couple days.  ;D

I'm still working on the Bamboo but I have an idea for a dubbing mixer that I just have to try. I need to mix some dubbing for carp flies. I have a small vegetable chopper but it doesn't quite do what I want.

I think I have fly tying ADD :-\

Thanks Trapp...as long as its not too fancy, complicated or small I can do a decent job.  Thank god you don't have to "match the hatch" for gills or I would be SOL.   I don't fish for trout much but when I do I leave that small stuff up to my buddy who is much better than I am.  My manual dexterity is somewhat limited!!

Carp Flies :clapping:
I love fly fishing for carp. I have some that work pretty well. I've been working on this little crayfish fly.

What you need;
#8 nymph hook. I'm using a Maruto206bl
dubbing of choice ( we'll get into that later ;D)
6/0 uni
black bead chain eyes
red squirrel tail
dubbing wax
Super glue

Tie in the eyes then wrap back to the bend and dub a small ball

Tie in a clump of squirrel tail on each side of the bump

Trim and wrap up the ends and apply a drop of super glue to the base of the squirrel

Twist the 2 clumps of hair to set the bundles

Form a dubbing loop

Use the dubbing spinner to form a brush

Dub forward, cover the eyes and whip finish. Give him a trim to tidy up the dubbing top and bottom.

They're carp flies so you needn't be too awful fussy. I think the darned thing will work!

So, I had some time on my hands today. Work is shut down with this blizzard and I've been playing around with making some cheap easy dubbing mixes. I went to Wally World this morning before the nastiness hit and bought some supplies.

Coffee grinder $18
4 skeins of cheap acrylic yarn $2.77 ea.

I cut the yarn into 6" or so lengths

Then into 1/2" lengths and added some sparkle dubbing

I put a small amount of the mix in the grinder

Spun it up and....Voila!

4 ' of yarn made enough dubbing for dozens of flies

There's a ton of possibilities. And....I have enough yarn in enough colors to make flies till the cows come home.

I bed those carp flies would be killer on smallies here in Maine

I bet if you threw in some brown spinner bait skirt pieces in a few spots it would look great too?
