Shrimp thievery rampant on local lake
« on: Feb 03, 2024, 07:31 AM »
Don't go out to your local reservoir with the intention of rinsing off your precooked pieces of shrimp.
There is a very good chance that before you can reel them back in they might be stolen by
members of the local channel catfish population. This problem is especially troublesome in areas
near causeway bridges where there is some current.  Evidence that something is amiss usually manifests
itself as a couple of taps followed by a major bend in the equipment meant to toss said shrimp out
into the clearer, current washed, flow. If one does not respond quickly, the cats will steal the shrimp
and leave one with an empty hook. These channels are ruthless. Frigid air temps, wind in the wrong
direction, muddy waters, even shelf ice  don't deter them from their mission to engage in shrimp
larceny. Don't say I didn't warn you....

fish on,   tap...tap

Yup caught several.  The larger ones were released after receiving a stern talking to.
A couple of pound and a halfers are spending some time in the cooler and will be invited
for dinner....

fish on,

Very creative….indeed!

I’ve been eyeing the canal near my home on my morning walks. The Raynaud’s syndrome in my hands puts a damper on that till it’s 50* or so.

This is the time for great catfishing. Most people don't take advantage of the winter bite. The resi's are great fishing starting about right now. I like using cut bait. Shad or any other type of fish. One thing i became a believer in last winter was using circle hooks for cats. Give them a try.
