More algae blooms in the Great Lakes
« on: Aug 31, 2018, 01:07 PM »
If the mention of climate change offends you ignore and just keep in mind that we are getting more algae blooms in the Great Lakes. Personally think a lot of it can be attributed to sewage treatment plants overflowing --due to flooding by antiquated storm drains -- during heavy rain events. Whether you believe that is due to climate change is not the point of this OP.

I was watching a video documenting how toxic algae blooms in the oceans may be caused by not just any runoff, but by the excess of urea specifically. The urea either caused the specific algae to bloom, or triggered the algae to produce the toxins. The industrial use of urea salts and compounds is interesting since the first thought of it is someone’s piss.

Yeah definitely a rich fertilizer. Urea does wonders for land grasses too.

One thing I learned about fertilizing ponds on purpose for fish production is a little fertilizer goes a long long way in water.
