Title: 2015 Hudson River Striper Reports
Post by: Gino@Rondout on Mar 16, 2015, 08:24 PM
Ok guys, Its Striper Time! I wish all my fellow anglers a great season!

Went out today from shore in Haverstraw. Still some ice floating by. Fished this evening for 2 1/2 hours with bloods. Not a bite. There was a guy out in a boat that pulled in a 26"er though.

probably just resident stripers, but a 26"er is a nice resident . Got about 3 weeks to go . Last year was similar to this year. Water temp was 43 deg April 15th. That was the first week we started getting better fish over 30". Try real shallow like 3-7 fow on the warmer days till then.

Did you guys see the new striper regs for this year? There's a slot limit now, you can keep 18- 28 inchers and over 40. Nothing in between. It's up on the DEC site

Is it still open cause these rules are very new and its not changed in the Dec website. I'm gonna be fishing Saturday and wanna know what to keep.

looks like they moved opening day for strikers to April and made the rules effective march17, so we can't fish yet :'(

looks like the Dec is now no better than congress... the season opened on March 15, but on March 17 they move the season opening day to April, but don't post this on their website until March 19!

The herring are around. Many guys including myself have been getting decent amount scapping from shore, guys out in boats have been jigging them, and the creeks are giving up plenty as well. Actual stripers have been few and far between, but I have heard some shore reports of fish as big as 42" as of today caught in the Saugerties area. Its been slow, once the water warms a bit, the action will pick up.

When is a good time to hit around the newburg beacon area.  I was thinking they usually are there now through may but was just curious with how cold its been.

Is seelys still open down by the river?

Fisehd from 4-8 pm from shore south of Kingston with live. Scapped two, scapping was tough. Very windy, no fish, no runs. Time to try a new spot

The stripers are in the river. DEC is having no problem finding fish to sample, but they aren't feeding yet, they all have empty stomachs.

I'm going out this weekend. From what I gather bait is tough and that's fine with me everytime they are thick fishing sucks. I'm not worried about bait we always get them it just takes longer some times.
The new regs really burn my ars I'm driving 2.5 hours for one fish a day I don't like to keep the 40+ inch fish.
The 30~35's are my choice to eat. Good luck to all.

Fished a little north and south of Henry Hudson park from the boat. Didn't have much trouble finding bait.  Landed a nice channel cat and a handful of bullhead but no stripers. Not even a run. Used live and chunk. Almost a full launch when I left at noon. Nice day to be out.

Bait was no problem  in the main river today.  Lots of people out there.

We fished around the catskill creek for the most part.
Went 3 for 5 on live 30,32,35 all in the morning. We fished sun up to sun down both days no runs after 11 AM.

Very very slow for us.   5 fish friday night up to 22.75lbs, but then only 1 saturday and only 2 sunday, everything else was small.   Weird.

Saw 6 dead ones floating down past us! I'm not a fan of the new slot.
I can see a point to it I guess but I think it needs to go 18 to 32. Circle hook helps but its not mandated.
We had circles on and still had two gut hooked fish had to cut the line and send them back >:(.
I normally keep my one in the 30-34 range 40+ fish don't taste nearly as good as a 30!

Can anyone give me any pointers on fishing with chunk bait? I just keep catching catfish. Don't get me wrong, catfish are fun and all but........

I hate everything about the new regs.   Competely agree here.

We almost never use chunk for that very reason.   We usually use just live herring.

I have tried it several times normally when bait is coming hard and have never caught a striper on it.
I think allot of the success you hear on chunk may be early on before the bait is in and the scout fish are showing up. I have often thought about suspending it on a balloon to keep it away from the eels and catfish.

That much herring is perfectly normal and it is like that every year up there.

I can usually jig one for bait in seconds  :o

Tons of fish still in the river, and they will be for a while yet.   Finding the biting ones is the hard part now.   We put exactly 50 stripers total in the boat during the 6 trips we fished it this year.  24 was our best day.
