Title: pond weed control
Post by: 1tigger on Jul 12, 2006, 10:28 AM
Just searching for some suggestions on weed control !

I have a pond that's about a half acre and most of it runs about ten feet .
The shoreline go's out from the bank about three feet and then drops to the average depth . The coontail and moss are starting to get a little excessive but I'm not quite sure how to get it back into a  reasonable amount of forage and cover for the fish without endangering the fish .
It's a small pond but produces some really nice fish . The hatch last year and from what I can see this year were very good .
By the way it's spring fed at one end  and does have a spillway at the other end so the water does move though slowly .
Thanks in advance for the suggestions !

We use Gass Carp, there sterile and eat all the grass in your pond.

I think its a more natural way of getting rid of your grass, instead of using harmfull "To Fish" chemicals.

On our pond you could not even see the water only grass, untill we put the carp in.

It takes a few years for them to get this big though.

Heres a pic of one!

the only problem with grass carp is they stir up the mud and your pond will always be brown from the mud

try using aqua shade it filters out UV rays to help control the weeds

I have raked a lot out but it comes back faster than I can move !
I have also heard of the < sterril triploid carp ? > but cant find anyone who knows where they can be bought or how much they are .
I spent about four hours out there two weeks ago pulling and raking some of it out but the warm spell we had made it all come back with a vengeance .

call your local DEC they can point you in the right direction for the carp but i would still try the Aqua Shade it works best when added eary spring before the weeds take hold

What is it ? I cant say that I have ever heard of it .
Is it like a screen material that has to be hung above the water or am I way off base here ?

I have heard that grass carp are harmful to bedding panfish.  They get in the nest to eat the weeds and disturb the eggs.  There is a guy on the Indiana board that I think does aquatic weed control for a living.  He goes by Powerworm.  Best of luck to ya!!!!

ive seen the stuff on golf courses. What ive seen of it though, is still a loss of some water clarity.

I used  that stuff last year, put it in before the pond weed started growing and the weeds never grew in. What i was trying to get rid of was the green algae/slime that was floating on the surface after 2-3 weeks that stufff finally started dieing off. I purchased the stuff at Tractor Supply for about $35 a gallon which was enough to do both my ponds twice.

Thanks crowkiller I'm going to check into this stuff and see what its all about .
I'm not too worried about the water clarity I just want to keep it a useable pond and not harm the fish .

First off, that picture on top is a koi or a goldfish not a grass carp.  And they are fine but they will get large and can stir things up but a small pond might only need one or two, I have twenty  they are big and  you have to get a permit.  Aqua shade works well also.  For you folks with algae problems, that slimy filamentous stuff that can form great big mats on the surface seemingly overnight.  you might try Barley straw.  Its very effective.

Koi,Gold Fish,Grass Carp its all the same to me!

On another note though.

What would happen if you just put a Common Carp in your pond?

Would it do the same thing as the Grass Carp,And eat all the grass?

It may work but I think you could have an overpopulation problem when they start to breed .

Would they breed in a pond?

If so,You could just stick a couple Common Carp in your pond for the summer.

Let them eat all the grass, then catch them after there done to get them back out of your pond!

Or just put one huge one in LOL.
