What hook style?
« on: Aug 29, 2008, 02:53 PM »
Is there a style of plain hook that is less likely to be swallowed. I was fishing for Sunnys and releasing them but I had quite a few swallow the hook. I gave these to another fisherman who was keeping them. TIA

second vote for circle hooks
Don't use your sick days when you are sick use them when the fish are biting. It all looks the same on your time card

Circle hooks are great for most types of fishing. I've not had that much success using them with bluegills. I'd rather use a barbless jig or an Aberdeen hook.

I use little lead head jigs. I rarely have the problem of swallowed hooks, even with little kids.

I have had some pretty miserable results with circle hooks for pannies. All I get is a ton of stolen bait and allot of missed fish. I swear by the things for cats in fast water, but it ends there.

You almost need a tight line to get the proper result with a circle hook. A tight line is pretty tough to get under a bobber. If you give them a tug to set like a regular J hook they will pop out about 1/2 the time.

That's what I meant by barbless jigs. Small bucktails and even some of my cherished ice jigs.
