PM, the most economical meathod is most likely the Brain Tan. Itis what the name suggests. There is also a good book used by us Fly Tyers called something like "from roadside to hook"? I will look it up tonight, but it relates to tanning, or preserving fur and feathers from the field. Also, look at the WASCO web site on Taxidermy supplies, they have a library section. So does McKinley and Reinhardt.

Fur, Fish, and Game is an awesome book geared towards trapping.  They'll also have a decent amount of ads and articles about tanning.
