Fluorocarbon

I understand that when using superlines you need to use a mono backing on the reel so it won't slip.  Does that apply to fluorocarbon lines also?

No.  You will not need backing for florocarbon.

My .02 cents, I tried flourocarbon as a main line on spinning reels, both freshwater (4lb test) and surf fishing (14lb test.)  Very disappointing and switched back to mono after a couple of trips.

The flourocarbon was stiffer, tangled more and came off the spool in bird nests.  The heavier line for surf fishing cut the heck out of my finger.

I would not use it as a main line again - it is fine for leaders.

I agree that most fluoros are crap for main line.   Have you tried using P-line fluoroclear?  I just bought a spool because I'd heard that those problems were much improved over Vanish and the other fluoros.  It's not spooled on yet.  I guess I'll just give it a shot

It's great if you like super limp, super soft line. Personally, I prefer line that is at least a little abrasion resistant.
