Which handheld GPS?
« on: May 23, 2006, 09:19 PM »
I am wondering which unit to get, there are so many to choose from!
What are the features that are 1) must have 2)good to have 3)junk?
WHich makes and models do you recomend?
I will be using it for fishing on and finding local lakes and ponds.

I have a Garmin GPS 72, its cheap and very functional. I wish it had more room for maps, but it is a good durable unit for the price. I would say to stay away from the very small bodied units, the screens are also smaller, and hard to see. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would get the GPS 76. Once you get one, you will never go without one again, especially for Hardwater.

Etrex user friendly. And with the added map software a lot of detail.
I fish for those "stupid fish" BASS. Largemouth Smallmouth Stripers, and even Rock bass.

I think we are seeing a small trend Garmin!....I have a Etrex Legend and it's a great little device, easy to use and pretty durable

You  guys south of the Border (Canadian Border) have it lucky, you can buy software with great fishing hot spot and lake info. In Canada the only software that is availble only gives lake info to bodies of water that are attached to the Great Lakes

I agree with the lack of maps for Canada, so I read up on map making and downloaded some of my favorite lakes. With a bit of time I now have a few maps of my favorite fishin holes loaded on the Garmin.

I have a Magellan Explorist 200. The maps are pretty accurate and so are all the other features for a pretty fair price.

Portability!!!!!!  It fits into a shirt pocket no problem and with NiMH batteries, my Legend C last about 26hrs in battery save mode.

Pretty safe today to go with any brand. Not models! You need to know just what you want and then go to a store that carries major brands (s) so you can compare against each other just what your getting for the buck! Once your sure  then go on line to the company and ask them what model best fits your fishing. Then go get one.   I still use a ole (2000 yr) magellan 315 and only wish I had W.A.S.S back then but it wasen't a standard. It goes every place with me > boat or foot.

After years of using a Magellan GPS 2000 and another handheld frs radio, I splurged and bought a Rino 110. It's a combination GPS/radio with a 1 1/2 inch screen. I don't have much time with it yet, but my hunting buddies have had them for a couple of seasons and recommended it very highly. But, like most of them, it has a lot of features to learn.
I worked all my life and retired to hunt and fish. What a good investment!!

I use a Lowrance iFinder pro. It is middle of the road as far as price and works very well whether I am in the woods or on the water.
