Title: Sally and Missy update
Post by: bigr on Apr 01, 2019, 08:51 AM
Recent rains have the resi's on the rise and very muddy. Good news is that means the crappie are on the move up stream. In just a few days as the river begins to drop and clear the search for that slack area with fish piled up will begin. You need to be willing to do alittle walking and to find your own little hole. There will be lots of them as well as the usual places that the majority of us know. The next four weeks will be the peak on the resi's. When you find that spot you can expect to catch fish on nearly every cast. Been my experience that the very biggest will be the first to show but will only be around for a short time then the masses of eaters will fill the holes for a few weeks. Enjoy what's coming and watch for reports. White bass run is also just around the corner.

Are any of these locations "up stream - slack areas" accessible by boat?  I am one of those guys that hate to bank/wade fish, but have a nice multi species boat that holds most all my gear. I have always been very careful about where I go, so as not to damage the motor or boat.  That being said, my boat is heavy aluminum and can take some abuse.  I have fished most of the main reservoir body of Mississinewa, but have been pretty wary of venturing too far up the creeks, so to speak.

Yes you will or can find slack areas from the boat. Ideal is from a kayak or canoe, put in at one of the close to river access points up river itself. But from any of the resi ramps you can run upstream in a boat until it gets noticeable shallow. Use caution and stay over the river channel as much as you can and just take things slow. You'll know when your about as far as you want to go and you may very well see other boats of your type making the trip also. Pearson mill ramp is to furthest up stream but resi will need to be 15 to 20 ft from summer pool for access from it. The dnr will also have to do some work clearing junk wood from ramp before it can be used. All should be good in a couple weeks I would think.

Got out yesterday evening for alittle recon. Fished way up stream on the missy in the 1812 reenactment area. River was falling and clearing up.  Stopped at three spots and was able to pick up a few White bass. No crappie. I wasn't really expecting to find crappie that far up but wanted to eliminate water. I would say the white bass should get better real fast up there. Today I will work further down stream closer to back up area. Not sure how much rain we got last night or the effects of it. I'll report on Monday.

Thanks, BigR for the continued updates. I decided to go try for some crappie/walleye up on the Wabash. I found out quickly that the Wabash was not wadeable so I tried for some crappie at a few spots. Managed one bite but that was it. The river was moving very fast but I still found a few slack areas. As you have been suggesting, it won't be long!

I started at at Red Bridge and didn’t get a nibble,so I headed up stream east of the washed-out bridge. The bite was fantastic. Caught 20-25 crappie, only kept 10. The water was considerably clearer. Had a couple over 12

Hit up Huntington above markle was not able to find them. Hit below the dam at the spillway and had a few small crappie.

Saw a lot lined up around the back end of the reservoir but didn't get a chance to go back out there.

May try Sally later this week.

tried 3 spots today in missy resi...finally found em in river past 13. long walk but had place to ourself. me and my buddy both limited. i had 6 fish that were 12 inches the rest were all 10 and 11 inchers. caught fish nearly every cast. started off with bobber and 2 tube jigs and had several doubles. got bored with that and started casting and retrieving twisters and got em that way too. Hope to get out again later in week.

Bite has been good for 5 to 6 days now in river all the way up to reenactment area. Crappie in the lower portion and white bass furthest up stream. Things will only get better for the next few weeks just might relocate some.

Both resi's are at the level the corp wants them as of today. Both will only go up from here on until summer pool is reached. A slow daily rise unless heavy rains. With warm dry weather we will see excellent fishing for all species and we'll be able to follow progression up stream with the rise until spawn is over. Reports to me are saying white bass are running well in both rivers and crappie bite is good were you can find them. Cat fishing has also been good. Don't forget about the gils. They also tend to bite well and you will be surprised at the size. Good luck.

I hope this lite rain right now stays light. Went last evening much further up river than where I've been fishing and the real big black crappie were every cast. River was in perfect shape. As I type I hear a much heavier rain hitting over head. That spot is done but now i'll search even further upstream. Migration won't stop. Higher water just makes it easier for fish to reach furthest spots. Might have to what a day or two for water to settle some.

Went over yesterday. Decided to try same area as sunday. Not quite as many fish or as big but still brought home 20. Average size was around 10 inches. Think next time out i will go further upstream. Been checking the river graph online and so far river has not went up hardly at all. Hope it doesnt change. If not ill be out again tomorrow.

Bite was pretty good for me yesterday...nice mixed bag crappies, white bass, and smallies. They pretty much shutdown missy spillway.

I ventured further upstream yesterday and could only manage 2 crappie but lots of white bass. Talked to a couple guys who had been there all day and they only had 8 crappie. 8 trucks in the parking lot tho and only came across 2 guys...maybe im in the wrong area lol. I went back to my spot closer to the bridge and caught a bunch of crappie but had to sort thru dinks. Ended up keeping 12 all 10 and 11 inchers...none any bigger.

Anybody really good at catching crappies on either reservoir?  I just need 6 live white crappie females for brood fish to produce hybrid crappies on my little fish farm. (Don't need to be large just obvious egg holders). I will capture the male black crappies in my area up here in northeastern Indiana myself. Just not familiar with fishing on those reservoirs and don't want to waste too much time. And whites are hit and miss up here.

Could meet you down there, get my 6 white crappie females and be on my way back home. No word of where they are caught is necessary. I can even bring my boat and trailer if need be. I also have a fish hauling tank in the back of my SUV.

And in case anyone wonders, it's perfectly legal as long as they are caught on hook and line, I have a fishing license and won't go into any public waters. And of course I can't buy them. I have it in writing from two biologists.

Let me know if you're interested. (260) 894-9055

Will be available and flexible anytime or day after next week.  You can P.M. me, email me at [email protected] or call me at (260) 894-9055.

Serious responses only.

I was going to come down and try for some whites last year but ran out of time.

Have to be careful what you ask for ... Any kind of barter like that can be considered a ( charter ) excepting a barter or gifts to take someone fishing is illegal from what I understand ?? I know some guys who did something similar to this and ended up in some trouble.another one was I group of buddies went fishing and gave the guy with the boat a few bucks for gas at the station and a CO . Tried to hang the boat owner for excepting money for a fishing trip and not being registered to be a charter ( captain ) ....

Hey Taxi, give me a shout sometime. I would also like to get down there and do a little fishing and would be glad to have you along.   I'm a little bit familiar with both bodies of water.  My time is a little limited during the spring, but I'm sure I could find sometime to get out there soon.

Quick trip yesterday evening to missy river showed me river was running four to five feet high and beginning to fall. Creeks in the area were beginning to clear but river was muddy. I made a few cast in the troyers bridge area catching a few white bass and a couple crappie. My guess is fishing should really get going again by end of week up the river when water drops closer to normal and clears a bit. This all depends on weather. You'll need to search in different spot as last week because of water level. I will search in the reenactment area.

Sounds pretty hard up for an arrest to me. That said I have rescinded my offer to barter. So if there are any C.O.s out there gunning for me it's not happening.

I try to make myself available to any that want some info on the resi's. No bartering needed. Long trip, short trip, full limit, couple fish, no fish, won't matter to me and what you choose to do with your catch is up to you.

If someone thinks you made alittle money from the use of public property(white crappie) you better have your permits licenses and taxes in order. I was told not to have fish frys using public fish even for donations only.

Fair enough but I do have it in writing I can plant white crappies or any other fish from public waters in one of my ponds as long as I catch them according to the laws of capture via hook and line and with a fishing license. Of course I can't sell them, but wasn't intending on doing so anyway. Just use them as broodfish and probably end up eating them.

This however is not true in all states. Like everything else the laws in our states are all over the place. Case in point: In most states I can sell fish hatched and raised on my private property whole frozen to fellow taxidermists with no problems. Or if purchase from a private fish farm. In Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana game fish can only be sold live for stocking purposes and even if they come from a licensed farm it's strictly forbidden.

Money hungry Illinois requires a $100.00 permit. Texas requires both the seller and the buyer to purchase a permit for "protected finfish" which is certain gamefish species.

Conversely some states in the northeast allow the sale of fish caught in public waters as long as there is no bag limit or they are not considered "gamefish." Last I knew you could sell bluegills in NY caught in the finger lakes. But at the same time (has been changed) you couldn't sell largemouth bass even if the came from a fish farm.

I see the reservoir has reached summer pool and climbing.  Heard the water yesterday at the SR 13 bridge still looked fairly good, color wise.  If I drive down from northern Indiana to fish on Wednesday, should I expect it to be decent color to fish in Goose or Listons creek or is it going to get muddied up by then?

I’m going to try further upstream. It’s a gamble any way you look at it. I’ve started at Jalapa and worked my way to the dam. Right now that’s what it takes to find em

Liston and any other coves will be muddy but if you get further back into them and fish close to shore the water will be less dirty. Further up river would be your best chance to find alittle cleaner water and large number of fish. Water will likely still be rising for a couple more days. Fish will be moving closer to shore with warmer temps. They are wanting to spawn. Temp isn't right yet.

I drove over the dam this morning.  It was definitely muddier then Sunday night when I drove over it.  This afternoon I came back over Red Bridge and it was really muddy.  It looks like she is about 3-4 foot high right now.  Lots of floating debris, logs, etc... in the water.

Hmmm, I'm guessing I will really have to be in the backs of creeks and using live bait or something with a little blade to get noticed.  I do not know the river section to try and navigate it with high water.  Still going to give it a try and see if we can't find a few for the effort.

The recent rains have all the resi's above summer pool and very muddy. Last nights heavy rains will push the level even higher. The bite will be very tough for the next several weeks. Sorry but I have very little info I can give on how and where to find fish under these conditions. We will need an extended dry period for things to improve. If there is good news I think it would be that the crappie have not spawned yet and when time is right they will move shallow and no matter what the level is you can find fish. Good luck.

Yeah this rain really messed things up. River was just getting down from the last rain and now its right back to nearly 10 foot and rising. Going to be weeks before the resi lowers and clears. Might be another year where i dont even fish the spawn there unless the rains quit. Would be probably the 3rd year out of the last 5 where the place was flooded for thr spawn. I love fishing there but it gets frustrating.

I always tell people to get em while you can because your always one rain away from possible not fishing the resi's for months. I have had people tell me it's getting over fished when they see the banks lined with people catching one after another but they just don't understand those times don't last long and there can be very long periods when nothing is caught.

I would suggest another choice. Levels are rising so fast that fish will be very scattered. Levels will likely stay way up in the trees for most of the summer. When the creeks that dump into the resi's clear a person may find a very good bass and gil bite.

Have our second son due in a week or so. So I'll maybe hit up hurshtown instead.

I got over to missy on sunday afternoon...first time in forever with all the high waters. Lake was 3 feet high then and rising. Decided to fish off the rocks at the dam. Ended up with about a dozen crappie and 3 nice gills. Caught all casting and retrieving twisters. All but 2 crappie were blacks and the females i caught were still packed full of eggs. Unfortunately the rains the last 2 days have yet again put the screws to fishing over there anytime soon.

Went to Huntington spillway. Snagged a few 15 lbs carp. Had a bunch of small crappie. People were keeping even the 4 inche crappie and smaller bluegill.

I doubt that place ever recovers like what I remember as a kid. They just dont know how to fish responsibly and I think the DNR station there is closed on weekends.

Reservoir is coming down still high.
