Title: Bucket list rocket fish
Post by: SHaRPS on Aug 26, 2019, 10:38 AM
Ok, maybe not an actual rocket but very close. This was my first ever attempt at Bonito and after this trip, I see the addiction for Bones and Albies. As with any trip, it starts with the captain so thank you Salmon&Striper Stalker for letting me tag along and getting me on the fish. After some searching and chasing, we finally got onto a school and I hooked up. What a fight on light tackle! All said and done I was able to hook into and land 5 Bonito and its a day that I will never forget! We did not see many hookups that day so it made it even more rewarding. For those that know me well, this is what its about for me. Catch, Clean, Cook. I smoked a few fillets and the rest was enjoyed as home made sushi! Bucket list - Check mark!

Was a pleasure having you mike. That sushi looks amazing. I need to learn how to make sushi rice. I got a tip on some albies Spanish and king mackeral I'm going to dig into. Might be able to cross those off too.

Thanks everyone!

S&SS - I almost forgot about the kayaker we had to save! LOL I think that was the good deed that got the fish to cooperate.

Yeah we didn't catch any till after that. Still dont know how he flipped that old town predator so easy. I didn't think it was that rough.

Congrats!

Now when you get one on a fly rod!

I learned a lot on this 1 trip. However, it was only 1 trip. I did see a few opportunities where I could have gotten them on the fly rod but the mission this time was just to get them. Next time, I can try the fly as well.

We get them from shore frequently down here.  Lots of them in Rhode Island.  I don't think Ive heard of them being that far north though.

Wayne like Jon said, they were reachable from shore. I also do not believe they reach Maine. Warm water and currents is key.

Actually last year they were catching them in maine. It was a freak occurrence though. I wouldn't target them in maine but anything can happen as we saw last year.

I did catch small bonito last year in Gloucester. It's funny. In the gulf they consider them trash fish. There are school after schools of them down there and can be big.

If they can't deep fry it, then they don't want to eat it...

I have to be honest, I think that was the best sushi I ever had. I mean yes bleeding it right away and keeping it on ice is key like with any fish meal, but its insane how this fish is in the mackerel family but tastes just like tuna raw. I honestly kept swiping pieces while filleting it and eating it. The smoked fish however tasted just like mackerel. One way or another, I really enjoyed the fishing and eating.

It reminds me of yellowfin a lot.

Yesterday I landed 7 albies and lost count of how many bones I caught. Today had to scratch and settle for a couple bones. Amazing the difference a day will make. The 5 I kept yesterday were delicious.

Thanks, it's been just like old times, pogies dissapeared this week, some of the bass left with them, lobster fishing has been awesome, unfortunately,  looking at the extended forecast, I'm pulling all 10 pots in the morning while I still can get them and before the get burried or end up on the beach..

Def a fish I would like to catch someday. My friends had a buddy that does guiding in the saltwater, and he’s heard of a few being caught along the Maine coast this year.

Not sure if the bones are still around in RI but I am going to give it a try this weekend. That, and some seabass action.

Hopefully you get on them. My upstate ny plan may be in jeopardy due to a oil leak. Might have to stick closer to home

I'm hoping to launch the yak in the Long Island sound to get into some hardtails as well.  Looks a little windy for the kayak so hopefully the weather cooperates.

Good luck.  We get them in the sound into October. My best day was in October...landed 13 albies.

From the sounds of it there aren't a ton of albies in the exact area I'm going but I'm hoping bonito or spanish macks are around if the albies aren't.  Planning on getting there in the dark to toss some eels before the sun comes up.  Should be a fun morning.

I can recommend a spot where the bass are eating those eels before sunrise if you'd like.

Be ready to get into some bones. Not sure about the macks but bones are going nutz from what I am hearing. Albies soon to follow. Hopefully I can find them tomorrow and I wish you luck as well. The sushi i made from them was out of this world so I need at least bone. Bleeding them right away and keeping them as cold as possible on ice is key.

Jethro - Did you see the sushi pictures on the first page of this thread? I forgot to mention that the left roll also had some fresh steamed blue shell crab in it. that was GOOD!
