i was told to put a can of tuna out in the sun for a day or two and punch some holes in it and put it on a rope and throw it by where im fishing. does this work? and would it work in a egg sack type holder?

Fresh cut bait - native to the river system if possible

stinky stuff
fresh or frozen/thawed cut bait (suckers, chubs, fallfish, golden eyes, gills, etc.), chicken liver, even some shrimp, crawlers, stonecats (madtoms). There are tons of different baits out there.
chicken liver and cut bait are my favorites.

Cut bait or chicken livers work very well.
As do nightcrawlers and frogs in certain applications.

Very good advice, I prefer cut oily fish or turkey livers.

Try to keep the bait right near the bottom, that's where the cats usually are.

Best bait? Around here in Virginia its chicken livers, Ive tried night crawlers and do catch some off of them, but I seem to catch more off of chicken livers then anything else I have tried so far.
Best bet is to try different set-ups and different baits, youll find what will work the best for your area. Not sure if your allowed more then one pole but if you are set out a few with different baits and sit back and wait, if the cats are around theyll let you know what bait they want after a few fish.
Down here on a typical night I fish with two to three poles off the bank, two (sometimes one if Im only using 2 poles) with livers and one with something else.

One important thing to remember is that channels in particular like to move around alot according to the surrounding conditions. If you're not getting any fish, keep looking for different structures.
