Title: Cape Cod Canal - 2018
Post by: lowaccord66 on Apr 13, 2018, 03:15 PM
My favorite fishing venue currently.  Figured we could use a thread dedicated to it.

Jon,

I may give the Canal a go this year for the first time. May need to hit u up for a guided trip or two to get the lay of the land.

cant wait for the start! bought a rod and reel towards the end of the run last year and only caught a few small ones on it. just picked up another at kittery trading posts sales event a few weeks ago. cant wait to put em through the abuse... hoping this year is at least half as good as last

I usually get a canal bass around the end of April. Usually a schoolie

How many of you guys fish there during the day vs strictly at night?  I tend to stick to fishing there at night.

Will if you want to try it out I can show you a thing or two.  I have a back up setup for jigging you can try.

One goal I had for this season is securing a camper trailer and sticking it down there for the season...

I fish both. I hate the bugs at night so I try to fish nights with a light breeze.

last year was my first year fishing it. the daytime crowd often is silly and maddening so I like to start fishing halfway through the night and into the morning. never tried it during the evening into the night though...

Finally found some ghostescent 228 magic swimmers in stock online and I got 6. They came in the mail last week. All set for the year and the next.

I like a good 9pm to 6am run.  Had some good fish last year late at night when there is only a few guys out.

Late June into July...eels would be he easiest way for a beginner to hook a cow down there.  Or do what everyone else does....wait until 4am and head down for a 7 mile shoulder to shoulder, topwater hope fest.

Last year it was unbelievable.  I was one of the many googans on the fishing pier during a blitz.  You got people reeling in a 30lb striper with the rod upside down, 15 others jammed up at the end of the pier bc they are all wrapped around the last piling, and you've got to let out 100 yards of line so you can go up and around them to land the fish.  I lost a cow trying to run down the rocks after I let a ton of line out to get around the other googans.

I'm no expert down there and surprisingly most people fell in line on the pier but the few that don't really mess things up.  I don't know if I'll fish the pier much this year but it sure is nice to be able to jig up mackerel on one side of it and live line them off the other side.  It just isn't one of those places that I go with the hopes of fishing in solitude.  Its essentially turned into the salmon river in NY with googans fighting each other over a zombie fish.

For the most part if you are fishing shoulder to shoulder you all need to fish the same method or you will be getting all sorts of tangled.  The locals will let you hear about it too.

There is 2 very different scenes at the canal.  The one Pat mentions and then the one I fish.  Sometimes in July nights will get busy but never shoulder to shoulder.

Blitzing bass are fun, its even more insane when you hit a school doing it at night!  It's rare now but 10 years ago I'd find them there by riding along slowly and listening.  Most nights you could find a section with fish rolling and popping bait all night.

Once the sun is up I am usually done fishing.

I just looked at a map and found the pier you are speaking of. Yeah no thanks. I have a similar pier 2 minutes from my house so I am very aware of that type of fishing. It only takes 1 googan to make a school of googans.

Jon - If you ever want company let me know. It would take me 1.5 hours to get there and an all nighter is fine with me.

Thats a 9" shad.

Pat you have the right idea, if everyone is jigging you don't want to be the guy trying to plug when its busy.

Shads are a great bait and they are really under used. I know a few people that exclusively jig the deep shads.
Title: Re: Cape Cod Canal - 2018
Post by: lowaccord66 on Apr 16, 2018, 08:07 PM
When they first came out I used to love the deep shads.  Im sure they still slay fish with them.  I have always done better with the 9".  Loved ron-z until the new guys took over and have over priced them to market to tuna guys.

I got a 6000 Spheros SW that should get the job done i think. Whats a good budget rod for jigging? I dont mind picking one up.

6000 will do.  Buddy of mine uses a St. Croix triumph surf rod that seemed decent. Another uses a cheap tsunami ariwave.   If you can get something rated for 2-6oz that should do the trick unless you want to throw the 9" shad, I use 5-10 and 6-12oz rated blanks for that.

I've used a Tsunami Trophy for the last 3 years and it seems to do the trick.  I think it is even cheaper than the airwave but works for me.

At the end of the day if it can cast a 3,4,5 oz jig repeatedly without breaking then it should work.  I went with the rainshadow 6-12 after having a couple big bass own me, couldnt turn them.  Last year I grabbed a odm jigster that performs well but wasnt cheap...casts a mile though.

Ive heard good things about the Jigster.

Tsunami makes a 10' 2pc in the 3-6oz range.

I have an 11' Air Wave rated up to 10oz. I jig with. Love it for the money. Also have a 10' Air Wave and a 10' TFO They are great plugging rods. I was looking at the ODM jigmasters. Not going to happen this year but maybe next. They are pricey. I use the Saragosa's on 2 of mine an 8000 and a 10000. The 3rd rod is a Dawia Emblem Pro. The older version not the newer style.

The jigster is my next rod. going to pair it with a saltiga 6500h or a saltiga 5500 expedition.
Title: Re: Cape Cod Canal - 2018
Post by: lowaccord66 on Apr 17, 2018, 12:02 PM
The jigster is ok...not anything over the top...its light and there are a number of rods that will do the same work for much cheaper.  I bought it because my buddy is prostaff with them and I needed an 11'er.  CMS built it and the first weekend of use I caught a sizeable bass and cracked some of the epoxy...

Those saltigas are nice units.  Also loved the older emblem pro.  Have a new one and a couple saltists kicking around collecting dust.

Ratty bike is the way to be if you are fishing at night.  Otherwise it could dissappear.  The gear theft issue has steadily increased with drug epedemic...

Mine is beat but was only 50 bones.

Ha. A ranger lost his job for moving my bike and gear which was on the side of the bike path already...to "make room" for that event.  Didn't even ask me to move my stuff which wasnt in the way, just started moving my bike with rods in it.  Called his boss, leanred he had other complaints (all anglers) and they let him go. He apparently did not like fishermen, and the fact that we are the majority users of the place.

Other than that, Ive never had an issue with the rangers down there.

How hard is it to pull the trailer. Was thinking of one but I bike the whole 7 miles of the canal from west to east on a normal morning. Didn't know if it would be worth it for long hauls.

Nice!  I can not wait to get down there. My favorite fishery.  Spent thousands and thousands of hours there.  Missing my pet rocks and standing spots.  Bring on minus tides, epic night bites, and a some 40# plus fish.  Let there be all night bites and no googan blitzing this year!

Ok now that I am awake....  I fished all three nights and landed 4 shorts....I do prefer night fishing  however when you find out you slept through big bass over 50" it rattles you.  Sunday afternoon I was knocked out.  Meanwhile the canal coughed up a few bass.

I'm heading back down Friday night.  Should be back at the ditch before sun up.  I'm still kicking myself for leaving 6 hours early Saturday night.  Looks like the wind is switching again right around the weekend.  Hopefully the same thing that happened last sunday happens on saturday.  Knowing my luck it will be a sunday thing again.

Jon, it was nice fishing with you as well.  Nice to have some company.  We need to meet up again to change our luck.  Between night fishing Buel and the canal we haven't had much luck together.

That will change!  Eel season approaches.  Did you see all the coyotes on your ride back west?  I cam accross maybe 15 of them.  Night creatures like to mess with me there.

Fished the canal from about 530 to noon on Saturday morning.  The fish were pretty tight lipped and really keyed in on live macks.  In general some people got a few schoolies on lures but the only keeper that I saw caught was on a live lined mack.  I could see smaller stripers push the macks up against the shore.  The schools of macks were small, like maybe 30 in a group, so snagging them was difficult.  We ended up with a skunking, outside of a cunner and line wrapped seagull (which we were able to safely release), and the gentlemen we spoke to seemed to experience the same.  I guess a school of macks and bigger stripers pushed through the east end around 8 but it was short lived.

People were lucky to catch a few to 35lbs.  Only lure that would work apparently is magic swimmer.  Days like that are tough!  Ctown was out there too.   Thursday night to Sunday for me this week.

Yeah magic swimmers were what I saw the schoolies caught on.  They were also what they were snagging the macks on.  Unfortunately I didn't have any with me.  They have a great action but dont cast great and the line always seems to get fouled up around the hooks.

I'm mostly a jigging guy myself but Magic swimmers and the Sebile stick shads are always with me at the ditch. Had a morning last year where the jigs were not working. Put on a Mackeral stick shad and 3 casts in a row produced fish in the 30lbs range.

Im not a fan of them myself.  Being that I am usually gone by morning I don't use them often.  They do work well though. Also take the rearmost treble off.  Helps the cast.

Stick shadd was what I got my pb on so I cant speak badly about those.

When you say camp do you mean crash in the vehicle? (sorry, remember never fished the canal before nor am I familiar with that area)

If i were to make the run it would be a family day saturday, rent a room and then fish when they fall asleep. I will text you if these plans work out. Long shot with vacation next weekend but you never know.

After last year EVERYONE is a expert. Fishing has been fine and is normal. People just think they are entitled to throw a stick in the water and catch a fish. There are plenty of bass to be had now but you just need to work for them. Compared to last year this time I would agree this year is a little slower but last year was just stupid. There will be fish this year but no way anything like last year.

I have the 13th-17th off this week. My buddy lives in Plymouth and always has a vacant room for me. If my deck project stays on track I will be fishing at least two nights down there (wed & thurs). He fishes it practically everyday or night whichever he choses based on tide conditions. He hasn't been skunked yet apparently. He snagged a bergal the other day after 6 hours of nothing and is counting it as a catch. I don't agree but who am I to argue with a guy that gives me free room and board when I'm in town. hahaha. Cant wait, I love this time of year!

Def a skunk. He primarily jigs the ditch so he must snag em all the time. Last year I snagged a 38in striper by the tail. Thought I had a juvenile tuna or super jumbo bluefish on lol. Seriously an insane fight but unfortunately I had to harvest that fish due to blood loss and fatigue.

Pictures at night are tough.  I notice people taking them and expect others do the very few times I take them.  I prefer to be left alone so I usually don't take pics there.  Plenty of that nonsense on youtube to be seen...11 years ago the only canal clips were from a couple guys in the gibbs club...anyways...

Yup it's pretty overt if you ask me.  Sure its a big famous striper spot.  However my buddy pointed out last night.  Some googan put up a vid shortly after finding bass early in the canal this season.  Just makes me scratch my head.  Not to mention a couple years of seeing 10's of thousands of pounds of dead bass lining 7 miles of each side when someone posts about a blitz in fb right when it happens.

I like sharing here but thats about it.

Ya we get the surf fisher here to they surf the Web stealing spots then fish them that's why I don't ask for the spot picture of fish cought at that spot maybe close ups of fish esle ware etc etc.. Funny thing is people post false spots weeks later to tick off those that are looking around here.. like on fish brain app we do that to the local googans all the time.. also it's just fun and games it take many years for these fishermen to figure things out but takes seconds to wreck it.. by posting location etc on web.. time frames when stuff cought..  heck I even baited people to areas by sitting in that spot year after year with a lawn chair for a few days the fun and games we have with people !! I think they still think fish is in that hole??

It's just a shifting dynamic in regards to how tech plays into fishing. The problem is, people would burn their own souls on youtube and many are happy to sell their fishing exploits for a few bucks.  To each is own but for me it's not why I fish.

I also find these types can't produce content at night which is a beautiful thing.

Its been busier but not intolerable.  Last Friday we got mugged and setup less than than half a pole away in the middle of the night.  Once it gets hot (if it does) it gets quieter aside from comm guys. I dont know how the weekday nights are anymore.  Usually dont get the chance to fish them.

Depends on how far east and the time.  I find 12-2am is pretty quiet over all.

Yes Shawn space invaders.  Couldnt give them lip though didn't want them to know we were in prime turf.

Hey Jon
Steiger craft all the way. They have one hell of a sturdy hull, much sturdier than Parker. If you have a chance visit their plant on the Island in Bellport . It is quite a setup.
My brother owned a 25foot Steiger craft with a 225 Yamaha for 10 yrs and it was very impressive in comparison to same size Parkers I've been on.
Also Steiger craft has a transferable hull lifetime warranty  vs parker 10 year

Hit the canal end of June through the 1st week of July. Very slow. Only time we found any serious fish we also found the crowd. Combat fishing at its best. Didn't even bother taking the rod from the rack. LOL. Not going to say where on the ditch. You guys that fish it like I do know where it was. Might try again this weekend.

Thanks Mike! If it were not for the canal I wouldnt have her!

Anyways heres some fun info for this weekend:

"Astronomical tides will be rather high during the night time high tide cycles tonight through Sat night. Fortunately wave action will not be much of a factor and surge is limited. However, leftover SE swell may result in minor splashover for vulnerable areas along east coastal MA tonight. Tides are slightly higher Fri night and Sat night so additional rounds of splashover are possible during these high tide cycles. Interesting to note...astronomical high tides will again be high in mid-August but a little lower than the current set of astro tides. The next set of high astronomical tides in Jan- Feb will be lower than the August tides. This trend to lower values for the high astronomical tides continues through the end of 2019."

These will be the strongest tides at the canal for the remainder of this season.

Jim I've taken a canal break since the saturday before last to flyfish closer to home and spend more time with the girls.

Next 2 days will hurt...leaving for Ontario Salmon Slam tourney in 3 hours.  Will get home Saturday around 1 to 2 am....sleep and leave for the canal 7pm Sat.  Fish all night and try to get home for 11am.

I know business people that do this type of schedule...sadly for them its work...

I didn't make it down until 2:30am Sunday so I missed the awesome Saturday bite. As far as Sunday the bite was still good but the Fish Gods weren't. Not to me anyways. LOL. Had 1 of those days where nothing wanted my lines. Threw the savages, Magic Swimmers Mackeral and Ghost. Stick Shads. All the same results.  :P
A lot of peddling and casting though. You just never know.  :o. Off to Loudon mid week for the races next weekend so it will be a couple weeks before I make it back down.

For what its worth Jeff you couldnt find what I was throwing in an OTW report.  It paid big dividends staying away from whats become standard canal offerings. Think about what was popular 10 years ago there.  That type of stuff...before magic swimmers and stick shadds even.

For whatever reason I couldnt get a sniff on a stick shadd.

30lbs roughly and my bad.  Jig came out right when I was about to tail rope her, she turned and slowly dissappeared.  Ps..doesnt count since you didnt touch it...try again this weekend.

Ive officially broken all three custom rods too...cms is my first stop...I wonder if there is a clumsy discount.

Yeah yesterday I only got hits on the savages.  Saturday morning you could have thrown a single hook in the water and caught a fish.  I however was probably the last person in my general vicinity to hook up.  The stripers were pushing the macks into the rocks.  I could have kicked stripers they were in so close.  They were keyed in on squid at first light and no one could catch anything.  Once the macks came in it was insanity.  I got my bigger one on a magic swimmer but was using it to snag macks and caught a striper when trying to catch bait.  My line was wrapped around the tip of my rod and it snapped the line instantly.  Rather lose a $20 lure than have to replace the rod.  Although I did find the top half of a rod sitting in the water right after that.  I got my smaller striper live lining a mack.

I do not recommend it at all.  There is really no such thing as a remote site there and its under the bourne bridge which is loud.  However for a sleepy canal guy whos fished all night its suitable.  Miles Standish is somewhat close and much better for family camping.  With Bourne scenic they took a plot of land and jammed as many rv sites on it as possible..many of the tent sites lack shade.

It was my plan to put a popup down there this year but I didnt get to it.

Last year.  Buddy and I are rigging eels late like 9pm getting ready for a tide.  We had 1 lantern going.  Lady comes up to us from the next site and demands we turn the lantern off because she cant "see her fire"

I don't do well with demands...so I told her where the ronz swims.

Got a skunk and something unexpected.  Was riding along slowly with a buddy...noticed someone riding towards us fast...tried to move left toward the grass...guy turns toward me and plows right into my rear tire.  He goes flying onto the pavement...I end up getting knocked over in the grass. My rods and reels thankfully survived...we had to spend 30 minutes straightening out my rear rim.  Guy was hauling on a road bike no lights...he ended up walking off with his bike.  Crazy.

d**n man, glad u made it out ok. I mountain biked for about 12 years. A few guys i rode with were also road bikers. They are BEASTS on the roads man. They can really haul on those things. If he was a serious rider, im not surprised by the no light. Those guys do whatever they can to eliminate weight and wind resistance.

Nice work Jon! I have so much fly tying gear and just have not dipped into it yet and need to. I keep getting requests for wine, sausage and kielbasa and that's where my "free" time has been going. Actually looking to get my son into daycare once or twice a week so I can have an extra work day just for that. Now we finally got rain and some gross humid weather so I am hoping I get some mushrooms in my neck of the woods. I have been craving a fresh bolete gravy for weeks now over my garden potatoes and fresh dill.

Somehow, all of my hobbies include work LOL  No wonder people say I am nutz.

What types of wine do you make?

I'm curious as a fellow zymurgist. (Yes, that's a real world. Sorry, that's the effects of too many rounds of "Words with Friends" talking)

My wife and I make our own too . . . everything from grape to dandelion to raspberry to rhubarb to you name it.

We have our first carboy of currant working right now, and are hoping to make our first batch of mead (honey wine) this fall.

You also make your own kielbasa I see.  Would you care to move to the northern Berkshires?

My adopted home town lost our last professional kielbasa-maker several years ago, and it hasn't been the same since.

bogtrotter,

All sorts of wine. From grape juice kits to everything that grows in the back yard. Right now I have 500ish bottles of wine that i am ready to sell and another 48 gallons that need to be racked, filtered and bottled. it never ends.

I also make mead. we have our own bees so honey is easy to get.

although the northern berks are beautiful they are just a bit too far from the ocean for me. I love my salt.

I do ship kielbasa and such as I have access to a shipper and dry ice...always an option.

I'd love to understand "favorable tides" more if you don't mind.  I've got the tide chart with the east/west turns, understand when slack tide typically forms and how the moon phases can changes things.  PM me if you don't want to share on here.  I've been fishing the canal for the last few years and just don't completely get.  My motto is the best time to fish is when I can so I don't necessarily care if the tides aren't "ideal" but not understanding things drive me nuts.
Title: Re: Cape Cod Canal - 2018
Post by: lowaccord66 on Jul 31, 2018, 04:33 PM
Pat we can discuss but your way of doing it is better.  There is a long standing pattern of better fishing during the minus tides.  If you look at the chart youll quickly see the tides I am mentioning.  However, after a decade of wasting away down there, that is just the beginning.  Tides relate to spots.  Some spots need a certain tide and more importantly a certain tide speed to produce.  Those details took me that decade to figure out.  I shared one spot with you where those details are critical.  Fish it hard enough and youll find the answers you are looking for.  Just as a hint...the biggest bass ive ever landed at night there were at a specific time during the tide.  Think about a couple windows of time in the tide that are most suited for big bass to eat without much effort.

This time of year I bet they’re jigging. Best day fishing I have ever had was on champ for a guided trip. We caught 64 between three of us, and everyone we caught was bigger than any of the little ones I had caught in NH.

My buddy caught and released a 19lber a few years before with the same guide.

I tried...need a stronger rod blank.  Average weight of a googan is up, the 1209 6-12oz cant maintain!

Hope your still slaying Joe!

LMAO.

Jon - let them swim out like live pogeys or mackerel and you will be just fine using live googans on your current rod blank. There is a post where Joe explains a good baloon trick that may help as well. LMFAO!

See this is where you go hand lining... you use a giant air cannon and shoot them out of it...it's easier on the shoulder joints!...just use circle hooks.. that way you can/might  get 2 sharks per googan..

still hitting them pretty good between lightning bolts.. no monsters about a 25 lb average... still beats a sharp stick in the eye.

Good luck Mike!  Joe I was thinking of your routine with the boat and eels and then thinking about my boat and ipilot...ot would be pretty stealthy no?

stealth is the name of the game... I've had more hot bites cancelled by knuckle heads that think that their 4 stroke engine does not disturb the fish....I've gone from doubles and triples to just plain drowning eels and aggravating the calcium in my shoulder joints after they troll over feeding fish in 4' of water...

Nice I bailed early to grab the girls and just got home with enough time to fish the river hard.  Too many people for me.  Got mugged on both sides at 1am...close.  caught each offenders line on their respective firsts casts to show my displeasure.  It didnt help my cause.  I fished 9 to 3am with nothing to show for it.

I got out from about 4-noon Saturday morning.  I ended up fishing on the fishing pier.  I figured if I'm going to be surrounded by googans I might as well get right into the thick of it.  There was a blitz around 6am and I was lucky enough to land a 42 inch fish that I'd say was close to 35lbs and one of the bigger fish I saw landed.  I'm not sure she would have made it so I ended up bringing her home for a great dinner with my parents.

I also fished Sunday on my way home with nothing to show for it but some some cunners and starfish.  We did however get to see a sailboat get within 10-15 feet of shore, in a dead low tide, so one of the guys one the boat could throw his buddy on shore a rope.  After about 15 minutes and several failed attempts the guy on shore grabbed the line and tied a plastic bag to the end of it.  Come to find out the guys had been out to sea for a while and needed some cigs.  After they pulled away the coast guard pulled up along side of them and I'm sure gave them an earful.

I hear ya Jon.  From about 5-9am it is just madness down there, especially during full and new moons.  Unfortunately I haven't spent too much time saltwater fishing so i don't really have productive fall back plans so I'll continue to deal with the crowds until i can find other productive spots.

I figured out a way to get the googans away from you. You take a jighead and sharpen the inside bend of the hook until it's like a knife. Then you just cast over them and snip them off. Works wonders and they dont even know what hit them.

Done.  I can accept the crowds and the desire to fish there for sure. However, some of these new visitors have no ethics at all.  None.  Nor do they have any idea why you need a bit of space.  Big thanks to gopro, youtube and FB.  Huge thanks to Al Gags.  Used to be one of the best...now just burns the canal on FB as much as possible to turn a profit.  Wonder what everyone will do when the stripers collapse completely.

...been there done that with the tuna.. does nothing for me... went through that phase many years ago.. I fished for them out of a 33' BHM.. when the ground fishing went down hill and tuna got too regulated with too many googans chasing them I sold the boat...Iv'e even got a few out on my 18' on hand lines.. my boat( the 18'er) has deep grooves in the rub rail where tuna dove under the boat after being stuck...I'll keep  bass fishing until the one comes over the rail with a tattoo on it's forehead  that says  LAST ONE!

I dont know what else to do Joe.  For years the canal while popular was my spot to nail huge bass quietly and most nights alone.  I can go back to the surf but man it used to try to drown me not to mention seeing all the "rangers" on the upper cape made me sick to my stomach, no parking...I love to see people embrace fishing but man to what extent does it become counter productive? In other words I expect to share some space down there but jeesh 1am shoulder to shoulder? Let me know if you need some assistance up there.  I may dust my boat off soon...

I fully understand what you are saying... you're a young guy..I'm old...if I lived down there I'd probably fish Rhody.until after labor day.. or rig my truck for driving over the sand..I caught a lot of fish there ( Rhody)  in my youth along the breach way and off of beaver tail.. the mussel shoal off Matunuck was always good to me although it almost drowned me a few times because I waited to long to wade back through the cut...I never liked the ditch.. even 40 years ago.
the dilemma you describe is the exact reason I picked a piece of water and learned EVERYTHING about it..I enjoy fishing alone.. the way I want to fish.. I will not combat fish.. another reason I dislike tuna wishing...if there is one fish ( bass) left and the wind. Weather and tide allow me.. if my creator grants me the strength to do what's needed..i'll find it... I try not to look at all the fisheries we have lost.it saddens me greatly... I remember catching 30lb Pollock off of the jetty on Kast masters spring and fall...we caught cod from the surf all winter long... flounder by the bucket.. whiting and king fish from the surf...Now that the spring rush is over and the easy fishing done.. I have the beach or river  to myself at night...and it'll be that way now until I pull the boat in october..just me.. the coyotes and piping plovers. And on occasion. I catch a bass or two... I haven't seen another angler the last 3 trips... life is good.

Pat...in your pic with the powerplant and bass...where are the hoardes?

They were all up on the fish pier tangling their lines together and almost getting into fist fights.  I had my girlfriend with me, figuring the fish pier would be easier for her since she could avoid the slippery rocks.  Within 10 minutes she goes, "no way am I fishing here.  I'll get killed.  There's too much testosterone and rules up on the pier."  What a sad statement to hear when FISHING.  Landing a fish on the pier is brutal.  I put my drag lose and let line out so I could get around everyone stuck on the corner of the pier where the tide was going.  I got down to the water, unhooked my fish and released 4 other guys fish so they wouldn't have to crawl down there.  It also deterred them from wanting to keep their fish since they didn't spend the energy getting down the rocks.

Best line I heard all day from an old timer was "good god, it looks like 30 monkeys trying to F a football over in that corner."  He wasn't even fishing.  Just to make himself laugh, once an hour he'd scream mackerel so everyone would start jigging the other side of the pier.  Some colorful characters up on the pier.

I almost gaffed someone in the face with a left hook myself.  I dont care how d**n long you sit on the bank if you arent fishing at 2am and are in a prime spot you arent holding it until 4am.  I won that argument!  Lots of people doing that.  I even saw a tent set up.

Hard to say Mike until late September. Too many days of Northwest winds in the fall and the canal can be very empty.

Usually around the end of October Montauk is happening.  Lots of guys there but far fewer in the actual surf...I'm definetly making a trip this fall.

I bet once the kids start going back to school there will be a heck of a lot less people down there.  September is the best month at the cape.  The weather is great, the water is still warm and the crowds are gone.

Surfcasting works for me as well! My boat or the ferry are just fine for an adventure.

I like the idea of taking the boat over.  There would be lots of targets to cast at on the way.

Ahh yes. I am VERY familiar with Pittsburg NH. Indian Stream, Maggaloway, and many other areas less traveled and far more productive. If you ever plan a trip up there, let me know I run my 3 pointers.

How did you do with your moose tag?
shot a cow dressed out at 455 lbs small one but good eating got her thefirstnight of the week 130 yard shot spent the rest of the week running the Brittany's on birds.

There should be no fishing in canel. Man made means they should go unmolestered or hampered. Free pass. MOP

Thats an interesting point of view.  With the numbers being what they are I almost agree.  I always thought it was ironic that its one "shipping lane" you can fish without getting slapped for it.  Try casting in the locks off the Charlestown Dam...see how quick they correct you!   ;)

Is this opinion specific to the salt?  There are a ton of man made reservoirs that get heavy fishing pressure all year.

Rumor is the Army Corps is aware of the crowding issues and may take corrective action.  Some of you may not realize what that means...go try to fish the outer cape and you will see how effective the enforcement is.  Could get interesting.

It’s like lassoing cows already in the shoot. It wasn’t built for fishing fish should get free passage. If the migration isn’t hard enough we funnel them through a  narrow canal  and call it sport fishing. Would you jig a fish ladder and call it salmons fishing. Then go at low tide when there is no water either. What chance does a fish have. Now that it’s 24-7.  April till Halloween. I just don’t consider it sporting.  I don’t poach Reservoirs ours here is off limits or any other posted waters. The legal one are fine.

What has changed on the outer cape?  I haven't fished there since I was really young and had no clue what I was doing.  My family rented a house in Eastham or Wellfleet since before I could remember until i was in high school.  What are they enforcing out there that they didn't previously?

There really just needs to be more enforcement of the laws at the canal.  I saw someone with a maybe 20 inch fish that he kept and commercial guys giving away fish under 34 inches.  If there were epos around they would have clearly checked that person w the short fish, took his fish, gear and gave him a hefty fine.  The punishment for poaching also needs to increase drastically to deter people from "playing" stupid.  Fishing the canal is no different than fishing any of the great lake tribs during the salmon/steelhead season.  Granted you could make the same argument about fishing the salmon river and some of those tribs.  Personally I think it is all very cyclical.  The last few years have seen epic blitzes down at the canal and hoardes of people have come out.  The blitzes will die down, people will get discouraged and you will be able to fish in peace again.

This is PETA material knot there...fodder for the antis.  The commercial guys off Chatham murder millions of pounds.  It doesnt matter that they are not in the canal.  Your rhetoric is pointed in the wrong direction.  Recs have some impact but they reduced the rec limit to keep the comm limit up.  Meanwhile the draggers dragging for fluke are killing thousands of pounds of bass as bycatch and must release them.  They cant be counted towards the comm quota.  Yet you are worried about the canal and rec anglers.  Laughable to say the least.  I know guys doing 1400lbs a trip off Chatham...and you call out the canal.  Yo-yoing bunker with advanced electronics and you want to call out the canal?  Meanwhile that 35 plus you caught looked pretty dead to me...pick a side is all im saying.

Pat...its so bad.  Parking restrictions all over.  Unannounced beach closures....rangers with state police authority.  Go to Nauset...try taking a 15min nap...

Are you on the right forum? You make no sense what so ever.
What difference is the canal with stripers passing thru vs a river funneling spawning salmon travel and are legally fished?
Not all the stripers migrate thru the canal. They also travel around the cape.

I guess we better close off Deer Island rip and Hull Gut too...ya know, because stripers funnel through those spots.

when was the last time we had a migrating bite through the canal. the last 5 years at least its just resident fish using it for feeding purposes to corral bait. we used to have great spring and fall runs but i havent seen anything like that in years. its just primarily summertime feeding. kudos to any fisherman who has been fishing the canal long enough to remember the fall runs in the end of september and the cold october nights.

I remember those days.  The days in October where they'd blitz after every passing boat.  Big fish in November when the sea herring come through.  I agree there isn't much of a run through the canal.  They come in and out of Cape cod Bay this time of year chasing mackerel.

and the reason is simple.. if there are fewer  fish to the north.. there are lesser amounts of  fish to migrate... Popham beach in Maine used to host summer populations of huge bass... schoolies were found in the saco and Kennebunk river systems and along the beach but Popham beach and the Kennebec  always had monsters... there hasn't been a decent summer population there in 20 years... we don't have the numbers of fish in the Merrimack and Ipswich bay that we used to have.. once you get north of Boston, the numbers dwindle quickly.. and anyone that thinks otherwise just hasn't fished long enough...

You can fish the shoot or snag in rivers in NY. Give me open seas or out in the main lake. I won’t jack bass on beds in spring.
 I like fair fights.
Yes I harvested my fish. Jon.As is my right. As I let many go too. That’s another thread on it’s own.

Thats fine Knot There...I enjoy eating them or did for many years.  My point being is there are much greater threats to the striper than a canal.  Sure some of us can consistently harvest fish there if we choose...and yes sometimes its downright easy...however funnel or not I have fished more blitzes outside of the canal than inside it.  Ill add that if you put me in a kayak or boat with a panoptix I will decimate stripers vs my abilities in the canal without electronics and being on foot.  The slaughter happens outside of the canal more frequently.

The only river there is the Ogunquit river. I'd use chunk bait and jigging on the bottom.
That river is really busy with surfers and jet ski's at the mouth. Talk your buddies into going on the Bunny Clark Charter at the cove. They are doing well on ground fish including Halibut(23 caught so far this season up to 105lbs)
Good luck

I also picked an engineer that gets all the delta perks.  Free booze on a plane is dangerous.

Fished Saturday 9pm to 6am. Lots of small bait everywhere.  Jigged my arms off for squat. Cape side was relatively free of competition, the mainland side was a disaster. Constant and excessive headlamp usage close to a couple proven big fish spots put me in a sour mood. Gave up at first light to drive 3 hours home. Still waiting for that first nor Easter.

Just got back from a place on Sagamore beach, I was there last week. Caught some smaller Stripers. A batch of fish moved in on Friday but they where of the smaller size 18-20 inches. Monday was a special day. There was a group of Tuna in the canal. An amazing site to see a fish that big chasing bait 40 feet from shore. Also a bunch of Mola mola moving thru a lot to see.
