Title: favorite walleye bait
Post by: mark1758 on Jan 22, 2020, 10:18 AM
So if you could have only one type of bait or lure and presentation what would it be? As for me, it"s a harness and dipsey i guess.

mine is harnesses and lead core ....but i pulled some "old school baits "out and work ...but my favorite presentation is lead core and i cant wait to put it off big boards this year, my favorite harness is one i tie called "crystal meth" dont jump on me for name ,just thought it was a funny name !!!!
nothing better than coming in and being asked "what ya get them on " and i say crystal meth !! some people laugh others dont know what to think hahaha till i show them it ,but harnesses are tried and true

yea, i haven't done much leadcore yet but i think i want to try this year. another thing I want to try on Erie is jigging. We do it in Quebec but haven't tried at home yet.

Nice! Yes jigging can be good in Buffalo area at times , biggest eye we've got last couple years was my wife's 11.87 at harbor one day when to rough to get out in lake on a bucktail tipped with crawler
And last year did really good there drifting jigs when got board with trolling

Favorite lure and presentation would depend on the lake and time of year.

Erie in the summer -

meat

Small Canadian Shield lakes -

Wobble jogs tipped with meat

Small lakes and reservoirs here in NY -

trolling sticks at night

Visited Geneva Ohio a few years back and they were using spoons with meat for most of the year. Location also determines lure and bait selection. How about leeches, anybody use them on Erie at all?

I mostly use rapalas and challengers. I added some Bucktails to my walleye box, going to get better at jigging this season

I remember back in the late 80's in the dog days of summer marking tons of fish and nothing seemed to trigger them.I bought a bunch of leeches and fished them on Erie Deeries. Caught fish for me when nothing else would.

We love trolling, but I love the thump of a bucktail jig with piece of worm when it's slammed!

Gotagetm is it more productive to tip with a worm the waters you fish ? ,
Haven’t tipped a buck tail in many many years , plus when we snap jig the weeds , worms get ripped off anyway

I tipped my jigs with a worm most of the time. We don't have many weeds in this lake but will use plastic when fishing weeds or if on a hot bite. I just don't have enough confidence with plastic to fish it all the time....h2l

Fr it's probably more just a habit if any thing but works so I stick with it especially next weekend when we'll be drifting fish Creek into canal at Sylvan beech , annual trip

The same as Great Grandpa. The OLD fashioned bait. A paper clip tipped with a booger. Good enough to fish him through the Depression...good enough for me.

What do people use from shore? My go to are floating Rapalas
Title: Re: favorite walleye bait

From shore I go with Smithwicks because my home water is more often than not on the dingy side and I like the rattles that floating Rapalas lack. I like suspending Smithwicks early in the season because I can fish them slow and put a split shot up from it if I want a touch of sink to it and then I move to floating Smithwicks when it warms up a bit and I can get away with a faster retrieve and also when the weeds start to become a factor.
