Interview and call in with Maine foragers. There is a rebroadcast at some point. It’s probably going to be archived as well

Very cool. One thing I have been dying to get my hands on are wild fiddleheads. I just can't seem to get the timing right!

Jethro,

I have been trying to find fiddle heads in RI for 5 years now with no avail. I am starting to wonder if I am just a bit too far south of their prime habitat. I doubt it but who knows. I think I have found every type of fern except the Ostrich fern.

Any suggestions from a pro? deerhunter?

I planted them 20 years ago around my foundation and other areas and I have more fiddle heads than I can ever use. They spread like crazy. and are easy to transplant. Ner my foundation they are a week earlier than down by the stream .They have not shown them selves yet.

my parents used to get them on the connecticut river 45 yrs ago. should survive in the right conditions in R.I . one of the places that sells the starts for them is in tennesee. maybe its more about soil ph tham temps. but they do like dappled shade.

The ones I planted along side my house on the N.W side are out 4' from the side I have to mow over dozens of plants to keep them from spreading farther.

Anyone have a link to get me started with some fiddle heads? Not sure if I should plant these in the backyard or a hidden area in the woods with more favorable conditions.
