Red rock fish fishing in Japan Sea.

Welcome to MyFishFinder! Looks like a nice Pacific Cod, but I don't know the small ones? How deep are you fishing? I am on the Atlantic coast, much of our cod fishing is about 30 and 300 ft (10 to 100 meters).
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1033.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa417%2Fstripernut1%2FAllan%252054%2520lb%2520Cod.jpeg&hash=ed2427b1e6ab2902b0ea364c8c81ddce) (http://s1033.photobucket.com/user/stripernut1/media/Allan%2054%20lb%20Cod.jpeg.html)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is cod. That day I fished red rock fish in 60m depth. Bait was very small squid, and coincidentally the cod bothered to it. I give it to a friend, she fried it and said very tasty.
Excuse me, it is Goldeye rockfish, not red rock fish. Other fish is Banded jacopever.

I would like to introduce many kind of fishing. I think that there is also the same fishing as USA, but there may be fishing unique to Japan. I am looking forward to your post. :D :D

Cool post, and welcome. Neat to see how it's done on the other side of the world.

Thanks! I also have interested in how fishing is done in USA. Pic is lake trolling last year. The fish is Masu Salmon that is kind close to steelhead. I am looking forward to it this year also.

Welcome aboard niru_04 good to see how it's done in other parts of the world, nice fish.

Nice pictures! Do you fish saltwater more than freshwater? I have never fished in saltwater but it's on my bucketlist. I will try and figure out how to post some pictures as soon as i get fishing. Trout season opens today here in new york but we just got alot of rain and the streams are muddy and flowing fast so i am not going trout fishing for few days.
-
You all, I'm very happy to hear the words of warm welcome. Yesterday on April 1, trout fishing was lifted in most parts of Japan. Unfortunately, I could not go. In Japan, bait fishing is more popular than lure and fry fishing for trout fishing. The photograph is a picture of a mountain stream fishing that went on in last June. The fish is the same companion as lake trout. I love both saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing.

Thank you. :D :D I could not post pictures of fish this time, but I'd like to try my best next time. The next fishing is planned for righteye flounder fishing.

are those stream trout, wild or are they stocked? It sure is a beautiful stream to fish!

Thank you for comment. :D :D
In trout fishing in Japan, wild things and things of culturing and discharging are mixed. How about in an American river?

Thank you for comment.
Even here, it has become a spring season. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The start of trout fishing in New York State is April 1st as well. It is same as Fukushma-pref. Unfortunately, smelt fishing has been banned from April 1st here.

Thank you for comment.
Even Japanese people are coming near there. I will fish in all locations, ice, lake, river and sea. I would like to post fun pics in Japan.

you post great pictures. trout stocking here is like Japan. Wild fish have stocked fish added to their streams. It is the same in the Great Lakes. I love all kinds of fishing as well including the ocean.

Sounds good. :D :D The feeling of loving fishing is with everyone. That is a lot of fun.

welcome, very interesting it would be great to be able to fish in an another country for fish that we're not familiar with although i'm sure you also have similar fish to ours as well....the trout and stream look so similar to ours and very beautiful....thanks for posting your pictures and hopefully we'll see more.

Welcome Niru!
I hear largemouth bass do well in the warmer climes of Japan much to the chagrin of expensive koi owners! Someone apparently illegally introduced them? I believe a largemouth was caught in Japan that rivals the world record caught here in the U.S.?
-
Good picture, Niru. Interesting shanties. Which do you think people there like better, ice fishing or open water?
-
Thank you for comment. :D :D
Certainly the discharge of bass in Japan is illegal. However, bass fishing has become a very popular fishing here, and the world record seems to be 10.12kg in Japan. Bass fishing tournaments are held frequently in summer even in the lake of the photo.
I am special in fishing and eating, and I dont bass fishing.
I think that people here love both, ice fishing and open water fishing. Doing ice fishing people are enjoying other fishing such as bass fishing and mountain stream fishing in other seasons. Of course, I also love both.

I thought of this thread today when I went out in a boat. I bought a used motor to try out on my little boat. It is old and in rough condition, but it ran and started easy. It is a Hangkai (Chinese), I wish it was a Honda! ;D But it was cheap and seems like it will work good after I give it a little attention. After testing motor out I fished a little, but no luck this time.

Please use it by all means next time.

I went to crab fishing in river mouth, and could catch 12 crabs.
The crab said “Mokuzugani” in Japanese, and is same family of famous Shanghai crab. It’s soup is very very delicious! In order to catch crab, I should be Ninjya. I approached quietly so as the crab not to be noticed and dropped the worm before. When the crab grips it, I raise it and put it in the net.

There may be many similar places in Japan and America fishing spots. On the ice fishing board, it was said from a fisherman in Montana that it looks like this scenery.
Pic is a local cuisine using crab, "Ganimaki". It crushes the crab, separates the shell from the rest with water. It is a delicious soup seasoned with soy sauce & miso etc and it is very tasty. The crab meat will look something like beaten egg.

I went red sea bream fishing today. 6 fishermen ride on boat and only 4 fish was caught. I could catch one of them. The tool is 10’ rod and electric reel, the bait is krill.
Red sea bream is special fish in Japan. It was used for celebration.

-
>taxid-san, zwiggles-san
Thank you for comment. In Japan, electric reel is very popular for ocean boat fishing.
The picture shows a state of fishing in mountain stream on Saturday. The fish is “Iwana” in Japanese, and is same family as brook trout or lake trout.

Electric reel. Very interesting.
Yes the fish is in the Salvelinus genus AKA the White Spotted Char. Looks very much like our brook trout (Savelinus fontinalis).
Thank you for sharing! Different types of plants along the coldwater stream than we would find here too.

The scenery of the mountain streams in rural areas belonging to the temperate zone is similar.
Now Japan is midsummer, yesterday the temperature in Fukushima-city has exceeded 37 degrees Celsius.
The mountain streams of this season, It's very cool and pleasant. :D :D

I fished red sea bream at 42-45m depth. In USA, red sea bream is fished?
I'm not familiar with Pacific fisheries in the US so I can't answer. They look somewhat like a few east coast fish with slightly different coloring.
-
>JDK-san
Thank you for comment. :D :D I see. If similar fish is fished there, I interested that tool.

Thank you for comment. :D :D I see. If similar fish is fished there, I interested that tool.
When I looked at that picture, I though porgy (scup) with a red coloration. Our scup are actually related to sea breams. We have porgy here on the east coast that can be caught from shore and out in deeper water. They are a very good eating fish and are typically caught with small pieces of squid or sea worms. A fun and popular light tackle fish.
-
>JDK-san
Thank you for information. :D :D Sure it seems that fish eat several bait, squid etc. I heard that this fish eat humans body in China. There is 3 method for red sea bream fishing in Japan. First is using krill, second is using shrimp, third is using metal jig. Usually, electric reel is used first method. The first method has low game ability and are boring, but I think that establishment that can catch is the high. I select first method, because I want to eat a lot of tasty fish.
-
I went kokanee fishing in Lake Numazawa riding on kayak. :D :D
The depth of the fish is 20-25 m. Bait is simulated bait. I could catch 9 kokanees.
The rod for righteye flounder is just fit on this fishing.
Kokanee is same fish as Sockeye Salmon. It is very tasty and I like it.

X2! I love lakes with no houses ringing them!
Got a nasty letter from guy with a cottage on a lake when I made that comment in an outdoor column I used to do.
My favorite little lake in Mass with no development except for a small swimming beach. Sure glad it's federal nature preserve land now.

That is very neat that the salmon live naturally in some of your lakes. Sounds very similar to the landlocked Atlantic Salmon we have in New England.
Do you know if they were stuck in the lakes or if they chose to become lake dwellers?

But he better be careful if he's using an online translator. ;D They are prone to error. And you can end up saying somre really weird stuff. My wife that teaches a foreign language rolls here eyes at them. Apparently they still need improvement especially the if the translation is longer. OTOH the wife says they have become better.
-
Thank you >all
Kokanee is landlocked salmon. I think they had been left behind by the lake at the past and became lake dwellers.
They like cold water temperature, so they only stay in Hokkaido in the wild.
It seems that there is Atlantic salmon in North-eastern United States that is the same landlocked type as kokanee.
My picture in here is in my website of smelt fishing. It is no problem. Dacker-san, maybe picture upload system that you use might be down.
Picture is the Kokanee fishing from the shore in same lake. We use chum basket and simulated bait.

Fishing on the bottom Niru 04- san?
-
taxid-san
When we fish kokanee at the shore, we fish it at about 10m depth from the water surface using float.
It is about 5m above the bottom.
-
Very interesting. Makes sense as kokanee are probably zooplankton feeders.
-
I went flounder fishing in pacific ocean. The catch was 3, length 29”,22 ” and 21”. Bait was a living sardine. The dish of the pic is flounder with marinated kelp.
I think that flounder with marinated kelp is the most delicious dish among flounder dishes.

beautiful fish; off the coast of New Jersey(Atlantic Ocean) we catch the fluke using a killie, a small live baitfish to catch these good eating flat fish and they are good fighters!

It’s nice! :D :D I heard that flounder is popular fish in East Coast, and heard a lot of people eat it.

It’s interesting! :D :D Kokanee is landlocked salmon. I think that it is sure to be in Wyoming State inland.

I caught 33 kokanees on Monday. Kayak fishing was very fun.
Influenced by American fishing friends on facebook, I bought a kayak, it was very good.

Just the next day there was a party with relatives. I made grilled fish with salt there, I was very pleased with them.
Someday I would like to make Sashimi on my kayak.
-
Recipe of kokanee
1 Sashimi
Attention to parasites! But it is the best. Good taste like melting on the tongue.
2 Salt-grilled fish
Simple and delicious.
3 Butter stir-fry
Olive oil and butter. Salt with pepper and parsley. Good taste!
4 Soup
Salt and “Dashi” and chopped green onion. Very elegant taste.
5 Egg pickled in soy sauce
Originally kokanee is a salmon, it is the same taste. Delicious!
I think that frying and smoking are also delicious.

I caught 33 kokanees last week(the best ever), but this week it was 9.
In Japan, there are many fishing spots restricting the catching number. The number is about 20 or 30.
The number in this lake is 50. But the recreational fee is very expensive, it costs about $45 per day.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww15.plala.or.jp%2Fniru_04%2Fimage1%2F20170821-1.jpg&hash=cd39987eae2483e54141d1bd4bb5971f)
-
That's expensive but maybe you get what you pay for?
Here people whine about more than $25.00 a year for a fishing license. They don't know what a bargain that is for what they get. OTOH if we paid just a little more we might get more? Or not?
-
>taxid-san
A $ 25 per year is good! :D :D
May be cost in this lake is most expensive in Japan. Usually it is $9 to $19 a day, and $45 to $90 yen a year in many places.
There are many fishery cooperatives in each water system. Rates are different for each fishery cooperative.
Kokanee is the most delicious fish among living freshwater fish. And the price of one goes from $ 4 to $ 5. About 10 kokanees can get off.
If I go fishing in the ocean, the cost of the boat takes from $65 to $90 a day. I am very satisfied with the fishing here.
-
Great posts Niru-san. Japanese culture is very interesting to me, and to learn how the recreational fishing works is even better. Thanks for posting.

Do you have trout fishing lakes?

Unfortunately, the release of fish is the rule there.

What species and what size? Do you have any brown trout in Japan?
-

In Inawashiro lake, space is 103 square kilometer and depth is 94 m.
Target fish is Steal head, Masu salmon and family of Lake trout. Fish size is 40 to 60cm.
There is no blown trout. It is living in another lake.
I love this lake . :D :D

They are smoked rainbow trouts.
I made them by hand-made cardboard smoker last winter.
Saumur is 12%salt water(in a little sugar) within Allspice, white pepper, black pepper, Laurier, sage.
After picking fish in it for 18 hours, drain out salt for 40 minutes and dry for 2 hours.
I smoked the fish with smoker for 6 hours. The temperature was about 158 ℉ and smoked chips was Hickory.
It seems to be popular in the USA to smoke making. I like it too.

Believe it or not someone dropped her off one night at the local animal shelter. I adopted her for $15.00 and with the requirement she had to be neutered.

It is good! Akita, along with Shiba, is the representative dog breed in Japan. It is known as a faithful dog to his master.
Richard Gere movie starring “Hachi: A Dog's Tale” is the story of Akita. In Japan, dogs were kept from the Jomon Period before 10,000 years ago.

I went to red sea bream fishing in Japan sea, and the cost of a fishing boat is about 65 dollars in half a day.
An interesting part of this fishing is that when the fish bite, the rod tip pierces the sea surface.
Red sea bream is special fish for us and it is regarded as a very auspicious fish. Even when sumo wrestler wins, the big fish is served at the celebration party.

Red sea bream is the one of most delicious fish that we can fish in Japan.
Sashimi, grilled fish, stir-fried olive oil, fry fish, soup. Everything is very tasty.
So red sea bream fishing is very popular in Japan.

Niru_04-san,
Just noticed you list your location as Fukushima City, Japan. Were you there the tsunami hit and the nuclear plants were breeched? How are things now?
-
taxid-san,
That's right!
The nuclear reactor building of the nuclear power plant exploded and the radioactivity caught up to Fukushima city where I live.
There are places where residents still can not live because of radiation, but they are returning little by little.
Also, the sea has been contaminated with radioactivity, but now it has been purified and is returning to the front.
Some rivers are also polluted and still can not be fished.
I had a terrible experience at all!
It was the hardest time for me to have a time when I could not fish. :'(
Also, at the time of the tsunami, the American army helped us as "Operation Tomodachi "
Thank you, everyone in the United States!

Looks like you have a lot of snow...
-
>dacker-san
On Saturday snow was 20 inches! This is one of the places where the most snow falls in Japan.
-
thats a nice setup you have over there. I'm getting my ice shack ready to put out. the lake i put it on opens january 1st. most of our smaller lakes are frozen about 10cm or so right now. i live at the northern border with canada, in Maine. it gets occasionally -40c. if you want to fish smelts you have to have a warm shack here. we also have landlocked salmon. brook trout and lake trout. are rainbow smelts a introduced species in japan?
-
That's a pretty cool way to fish. Floating house. Could get served a meal in that one
-
Niru_04,
Do you know what genus species your smelt are? Are they a native smelt or were they introduced? Our inland smelt here are the genus species Osmerus mordax known as Rainbow Smelt.
Thank you!
-
Rainbow smelt are distributed throughout the world are they not? Pretty sure they were only introduced to inland lakes such as the Great Lakes. I thiught they existed naturally in both the Atlantic and pacific oceans in the colder climates, so I’m assuming they are native.
-
>jacksmelt-san
Thank you. Soon it will become the ice fishing season. This lake freezes at the beginning of January, and at the beginning of March it becomes ice (ice crowned with snow falling on the surface of water) thicker than 1 m. The picture was posted to iceshantycom last year. Rainbow trout and Brown trout are transplanted to Japan, but Brown trout seems to have a bad influence on native species, in particular.
>fishin4eyes-san
Thank you. In Japan it is very popular to catch smelt in a large boat floating on a lake. There are also heating and comfortable, some people make it a date place.
>taxd-san
Thank you. Smelt in Japan is saying Hypomesus nipponensis, it seems to be distributed in the Okhotsk Sea coast, partly in California State, centering on the northern half of Japan. Especially the discharging business is thriving and more than 100 million eggs are released to this lake every year. It is slightly different from the American Osmerus mordax, even if it grows its size is as small as 5-6 inches.
>zwiggles-san
Thank you. Rainbow smelt seems to diffuse throughout the world, but it is not transplanted to Japan. Essential species are cherished, and it is released to the domestic lake.

You are welcome. I found out that you are interested in the problem of alien species here.

It's a world wide problem sadly.
Our Great Lakes keep getting new exotic species via ballast water from ships. We now have the dreaded Asian tape worm in the Great Lakes which means no sushi for us!
-
>taxid-san
I see. Asian tape worm is terrible! In japan it is a past parasite, but it may still be in other Asian countries.
The problem with black bass is the biggest here.
It is a threat to the conventional ecosystem in many places, but it seems that it coexists in the lake where I fish.

Love Waygu myself! What made you go with the Kagoshima over Kobe, Ozaki, Ohmi or Tajima and what cut did you get?

That prefecture supposedly beat Kobe in the "beef olympics" they have every 5 years...but mainly because it happend to be what crowd cow was selling. I purchased a strip loin and of course a tenderloin!
Hank, outside of ground beef I dont eat a ton of red meat, maybe have had 4 steaks in 10 years....I had read something about the waygu and figured I'd try it.

Thank you for comment, guys.
Japanese Wagyu is loved so much, I’m very happy.

It’s so great!! :D
The pic is smelt fishing on Thursday.
In Japan smelt fishing is highly gaming fishing just like Bass fishing in USA.
We are enthusiastically engaged in fishing, as is the venue of fishing tours every day.
In the Lake where I go, there are smelt fishing boats more than 10.
The boat where I went is distributing the memorial towel to the man of the top. I was fortunate to be the top.

Niru-san it was very good. Even my 5 year old daughter had some and enjoyed it. It was a great meal before a day of fishing!

I made smoked rainbow trout using new smoked box. Unfortunately it was not caught, bought from fish farm.
The outside temperature was low, so temperature control was serious, but I could make it. The taste is good!

It was a difficult point of this time that the structure is weak and the heater of the heat source is weak. I would like to improve next time.
-
Niru-san, what do you burn for smoke? ;D
-
>fishnmachine-san
I am burning a Hickory smoke wood like a incense. I like its fragrance very good.
The temperature is managed by combining an electric cooktop and a thermostat. The cooktop is 600W, and is weak.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww15.plala.or.jp%2Fniru_04%2Fimage1%2F20171217-5.jpg&hash=6684d193db0e8c6e3a7081e7330d5b70)
Cherry, Beech, Walnut, Apple, Oak, Hickory
-
I like hickory smoke, especially on pork and beef.
I'm getting ready to smoke our Christmas ham. I use only corn cobs for that. It's a family tradition. I'll post pictures of my homemade smoker when I get started. ;D
-
>fishnmachine-san
Sounds good :D The family traditional method is nice. I’m looking forward to your picture. I had make only smoked fish, but would like to make spicy beef jerky next time.
-
Man, excited about Christmas! Especially if my wife's going to serve smoked ham as well. It's her specialty.
-
niru-san
I set up my smoker today. It is a 55 gallon barrel fed by an old coal stove. The barrel is covered with burlap and a wool blanket to let the smoke seep. No heat reaches the meat. It is a "cold" smoke.
(https://s31.postimg.org/xdactz1br/20171220_150236.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/xdactz1br/)
I am going to smoke a 14 lb. ham shank and two 3 lb. boneless hams.
(https://s31.postimg.org/7vryagbwn/20171220_151354.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/7vryagbwn/)
I use whole corn cobs. That is the only thing that has been burnt in this stove for at least 35 years.
(https://s31.postimg.org/40ok7gsmf/20171220_151926.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/40ok7gsmf/)
I hang the basket of ham in the barrel and light the cobs with a propane torch. No paper or other kindling. Just cobs.
(https://s31.postimg.org/4dfydzazr/20171220_152223.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/4dfydzazr/)
I will burn about a dozen cobs a day for five days. Then I consider the hams done. My grandfather taught me this many years ago. If I don't smoke ham for Christmas and Easter every year, my daughter's get angry with me!
-
> TrentBill-san
Smoked ham is tasty. I like it. :D
> fishnmachine-san
Thank you for post pic. :D
It’s wonderful! Especially feeling of used tool is very good. Boneless hams looks tasty. Christmas celebrating with homemade food seems to be very fun! I think that "cold" smoke is a difficult way. Someday I would like to make smoked salmon by “cold” smoke.
-

It is a product consisting of pottery and the underlying metal dish and stainless skewers. The pottery consists of two ones, one on that outside and the other table on which charcoal is placed. On outside pottery, there are 14 holes in the outside towards the inside, and I insert a stainless steel skewer there. Place charcoal on table is placed and bake the fish with skewers and bake it very well. Fish is very delicious.

Beautiful lake, and that is a pretty fish. What species is that? It looks like a young lake trout to me, are they stocked in Japan?
-
>seamonkey84-san
Thank you. :D It is "Iwana", a Japanese traditional species of closely related species of Lake trout. Rainbow trout, transplanted from North America 100 years ago, also live in this lake.
-
Thank you, I thought it was some type of char. I’m in Maine, USA and we have a hybrid of brook (aka speckled) trout and lake trout that get stocked in some lakes, and those looked very similar.
This is the hybrid that we call splake, I caught it about a month ago

Thank you for the picture. Surely it is most similar to brook trout. In Japan, Iwana is the fish most living upstream of the river, it is a popular fish in mountain stream fishing. Bait fishing, fly fishing, lure fishing, we can fish in any way.

I had used Garmin panoptix sonar PS31 for kokanee fishing at the first time. I thought it is so useful for my fishing, especially live view. I could find a school of kokanee where is front 40m of my kayak. And I was able to detect their course. The function other than live view was not necessary. I may have made an excessive investment. I got the ps22 a couple weeks ago myself, I’ve used it twice so far and bringing it out again tomorrow. It may be pricey, but I already feel it was worth it. I see it as about the same as investing in a gaming computer. People spend just as much if not more into other electronics, and most of it keeps them indoors, while we get to play in the real world.
-
〉seamonkey84-san
That's so good. Panoptix system is excellent! I think it has a power that change the method of fishing. PS22 is also good. I love this system.
-
I agree with this changing the way I will fish. It’s better than having under water cameras, those can’t see far enough, the water has to be perfect for it to be useful. I got mine as the ice fishing package since I feel that is where it will make the biggest difference. Plus, it’s portable so I can use it in my boat or in any of my friends.
-
That's also so good. I'll get Garmin ice package, and use it for ice finding. PS31 is a little big, but I'm looking forward to see the screen. Maybe I'll find a school of fish by this system.
-
We used a Panoptix all day yesterday. It is pretty awesome.

I ate them, as Sashimi,Butter stir-fry and Kobujime.
It took me three hours to handle 10 flounders.
-
>niru -san
Thats a big charter boat?
Whats something like that cost to fish off?
-
It is a 14-seater fishing boat and it costs 10,000 yen per person in about 6 hours.
There is the living sardine of bait in price.
-
Good job on the flounder, niru!! you are a fishing machine!!! 😎

I went right eye flounder fishing, and fished a octopus. We Japanese have the culture eating it and love it so much.
I made octopus rice and ate it, it's so tasty!

Niru ,Thank you for sharing photos and stories of your fishing trips. How does someone remove hook from octopus with out getting bitten in the process.
Steve
-
>mr.clean-san
Thank you. :D
The hook was stuck in the foot and it was immediately removed. I put octopus in a plastic bag and put it in a cooler box with ice. After a while, it was dying spitting out ink. Octopus of the photo is already dead.

Very nice Niru!

The shellfish are asari clams and its size is about 1 inch. It inhabits many coasts of Japan and I take it in the spring.
-

Your paella looks delicious! It's one of my favorite meals. What time is dinner? Lol! ;D
-
I will also chime in on how delicious that food looks!
I am curious Niru, how much of your diet is made up of what you can gather? It seems like you eat a lot of wild food which is neat.
-

Thank you. :D
Paella is a popular dish in Japan. Last night I ate an amount for two people.
>zwiggles-san
Thank you. :D
The purpose of my fishing is to eat delicious fish dishes. I would like to use it as dinner for 4 times a month.
-
Niru-san the octopus looks good. Catch and release fishing is fun but it doesn't compare to catching, cleaning and enjoying the catch.
-
>lowaccord66-san
Thank you. :D
I think fishing is fun any way. In Japan, catch and release fishing is so popular, and bass fishing and “Herabuna” fishing are representative.
I’m a greedy eater and love to fish and eat. lol

Niru, Great looking food you prepared!!😎
When does your icefishing season start? Our smaller lakes and ponds are freezing over now. Going to be a little bit longer for our bigger lakes.
-
>KingPerch-san
Thank you. :D
It’s wonderful that your lakes are already frozen! In Japan(Honshu), ice fishing is usually start around the end of December. In my lake (Hibara lake), ice fishing will be start around mid-January. Until then, it will be fishing on a dome boat. I gona go to dome boat for smelt fishing next Monday. I'm planning to post to iceshanty.com about the picture of ice fishing.
-
See you on Iceshanty Niru-san, good luck with the smelt.

The pic is dome boats on Hibara Lake. It is fixed by weight and rope and there are about 10 business persons having boat like this in this lake.
We’ll go to favorite dome boat and some people will party in the boat while fishing.

I went smelt fishing yesterday. It was difficult to catch it. Because bite is very little and I had to hook it by intuition. Garmin’s panoptix system is excellent! I could watch school of smelt on the bottom. On the screen it is the yellow green part below. I’m looking forward to use it in ice fishing.
And Merry Christmas guys! Good luck for fishing.

>hunts2long-san, rivereddy-san, filetandrelease-san
Thank you. :D
Smelt fishing is very popular in Japan. The Japanese smelt is very small. About 2-4 inches.
We usually use an electric reel using AAA batteries. Terminal tackle is small 5-7 hooks with 4-5g sinker.
Bait is maggot cutting it in half. We enjoy very small bite that’s on rod tip.
-
Niru, are the rigs you use similar to a sabiki rig?
-
>KingPerch-san
Yes it’s similar to sabiki rig and hook is very small. Its length is about 80cm.
-

My guess is Salvelinus leucomaenis, or "whitespotted char"
They look real similar to brook trout when young/juvenile but start to look distinctly different as they grow older. While the landlocked variety seem to be similar sized to eastern brook trout (fontinalis), it looks like they can get quite larger than eastern brook trout when sea-run/anadromous. Very cool fish for sure...

It’s “Iwana” in Japanese, and scientific name is Salvelinus. They are in the same group of brook trout and lake trout. “Iwana” is living in most upstream, and so popular fishing target fish in Japan. The biggest size is over 24".

Salvelinus is the genus, leucomaenis is the species.

I love your mountain stream and the trout you caught. I just returned from the Catskills in New York State and fished Fir Brook , a small trout stream which contain brook trout; caught 4 from 6-9 inches on a tan caddis size 16 fishing one afternoon in the forrested mountains near De Bruce, NY. Also fisahed for brown trout in the Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers getting 46 browns to 20 inches all on flies. Great fun; come visit!
-
Wow, cooking in a kayak, that takes some skill. Even when are out in a bigger boat, we still go to shore to do any cooking. That’s an amazing way to have your meal, and a nice batch of fish too. I always enjoy reading your posts and seeing your pictures. I hope you’re enjoying your panoptix, I just got a separate mount for my ice package so I can scan around with it in a boat without clamping it to the trolling motor.

Awesome video Niru! The salmon must hit the rod and then head towards the surface? It’s odd seeing the rod lose tension when the fish hits.
-
>zwiggles-san
Thank you. :D :D This fish has the habit of swimming upwards after biting. So It is signal of bite that there is no tension at the tip of rod. They pull 112.5g sinker.

Entry fee on this lake is expensive. It costs about $ 250 a season (April to September) or $ 45 a day.
So I think there are few anglers.
I really like the kayaking fishing table I made myself. The rod and transducer can be fixed, which is very convenient.

Thanks for your reply. Yes when money is involved that separates the serious ones from the not so serious. That said I would gladly pay $250.00 per year to fish a lake like that!

Niru-san that looks interesting.
Is the oil kept at a low temperature?
-
>dacker-san
Thank you. :D :D
Yes, it's about 85 degrees Celsius. We can eat all of fish.
-
Niru-san
Any special kind of oil ?
-
>dacker -san
It is ordinary olive oil with garlic, chili and bay leaves.
It was delicious when I ate it with a sauce made of spinach, trefoil, butter and white wine.
-
I never even heard of poaching fish in oil or butter until you shared that. I’ve always just turned up the temp and fried everything or baked it. Thank you, now I have another idea for any fish I may start keeping.

Thank you. :D :D
I think this fish kokanee is the most delicious fish among living in fresh water in Japan.
So it's so fun thinking and trying good dish.
-
Niru-san that looks amazing. Do you ever smoke those kokanee?
-
>lowaccord66-san
Thank you. :D :D
I haven't made it in kokanee yet, but I'd like to make it next month. I think it ’s absolutely delicious.

After long time, I tried night fishing. Target fish is eel. I caught only 2 eels, but in summer night feel so good.
I had made kabayaki of eels, we Japanese love that dish so much.

That looks really good Niru-san. I had eel in Amsterdam and it was awesome.

Thank you. :D
My fishing policy is catching good taste fish, so this time I'm very happy. Eel is so tasty fish.
-
You're welcome Niru-san. Here in New England we trap eels and then use them for bait for striped bass. Not many people eat them.
I'm curious to learn a bit more about how you fish for them?
-
Niru-san,
My family is from Poland and eel is actually very popular there as well. I grew up eating smoked eel and I absolutely love it. When my grandmother was alive, one of my favorite dishes from her was pan seared eel in home made butter. Just talking about it, I can smell the butter and eel. Not sure how you fish for them but for me its a sea worms on a simple high low rig with gold hooks.
Your eel looks tasty!
-
>lowaccord66-san
We use simple tackle as pic, hook for eel(leader45cm),30-40g of sinker, nightlight on the tip.
Bait is earthworm.
>SHaRPS-san
Thank you. :D It ’s interesting. I have heard that eel is a popular foodstuff in Europe. There people eat like that.
In japan, we usually eat "Kabayaki" like pic. It's one of typical Japanese cuisine and a feast for us.

Actually we are one of the few states that has a commercial elver industry (post lava levels). They go for big money, caught and kept alive, then sold to the Asian farms that raise them for food. I remember catching them all the time when striper fishing at night using the sand/blood worms. Same thing in fresh water, night crawlers on bottom at night. Anywhere just about every body of water that is connected by a stream/brook will have them since the young migrate upstream from the ocean, and dams don’t stop the young.

Yes I agree. It is fun to catch and release but catching and preparing and eating is quite the experience. I cant wait for ice fishing season for that reason!

>seamonkey84-san
Thank you. :D I see, I learned a lot. Eel farming is a big industry in some region of Japan. Indeed, eels now have the potential to be designated as an endangered species. If complete aquaculture is being studied and the technology is complete, I think it would be very good and hope that. I pray that the culture of eating eel will not disappear.
> lowaccord66-san
Thank you. :D I am particularly gluttonous, so I think so. And me too, I can't wait ice fishing season.
-
This summer heat has made me dream about being on the ice. I think the ice shanty forum is getting more daily activity right now than this site.
-
I made kokanee rice. Seasoning is soy sauce, mirin, sake and soup stock. Green vegetable is Japanese herb "Mitsuba". It's so delicious.
