this is a spotted gar i hooked one of seven different types four of whom reside in Texas rivers and bayou systems (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi46.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff109%2Fviperdude88%2FFish%2520pictures%2Fmaggie134_zps72c4420b.jpg&hash=47ff4b5986961b32949e57bd82e14bde)

Long-nose gar actually. I caught one while bullhead fishing last year. It had it's jaws clamped down on my line only, no hook in it's mouth. strangest catch ever.
-
this is definitely a spotted gar ive caught plenty of long nose and that nose is definitely the first thing you notice to me it wasn't any longer then usual
-
Actually, I thought the first picture was a long nose gar. In any event, I won't argue with anybody who has caught more than me. ;D

Here is an older video of the gar and other fish in my son's tank.. ;D Now that sucker is about 16" long.... ;D

o it most definitely did funny thing about gar they will spit bait out in a heart beat i used hot dogs if you can believe it they love them for some reason.
-
i want to get my hands on a pike i saw a couple of vids on here and pike just look like all kinds of fun.

I enjoyed your thread and your pictures, thanks for sharing. I've had many gars hit but rarely hook them for obvious reasons when bass fishing. This past spring I hooked nice big longnose gar one on a Rat-L-Trap and had it to the boat. Just as I reached to net the fish the hook pulled free and off it swam. I was so close to landing my first gar! This one remains on my bucket list!

I remember reading some years ago in the In-Fisherman (I believe it was) magazine about a guide that developed a system for fishing for Gar with a very successful hookup rate. If I remember right, he used a length of braided rope that he had unraveled and tied onto the shank of the hook he used like somewhat of a crude fly which he then dipped in some homemade concoction of scent. Apparently, when a Gar took his rig, it had trouble shaking the lure (or fly) whatever, from it's mouth because it would become tangled in it's teeth allowing the angler time to get a good hook set.

Yeah, I heard that too WK. A buddy of mine actually ordered lures designed for gar along that principle. I'll see if I can get the name of them and a picture. I've been too cheap to buy one!
