Now that the icefishing is slowing down for some of us, I've got a question. What should I do to my shanty so the mice don't chew holes in the frabric?
-
hey chuckles place a good summer supply of cheddar cheese around the OUTSIDE of the shanty. at least you will know they aren't INSIDE. ;D ;D ;D ;D grump
-
As I don't use a shanty, I can't swear that this works but I know guys that put dryer softener sheets in their shanties over the summer (and boats over the winter) and they swear it helps keep the varmints out.
-
I would give mothballs a try.
-
sos soap pads
-
What about old fashion mouse traps?
-
I used mothballs in my permanent shanty and it kept the mice out. I'd give this option a try! ;D
-
Mothballs is definitely the way to go.....had a Summer home for 23 years and when we closed it down for the Winter we scattered mothballs all around the house, and in the drawers where we kept bedding/clothing.
Never had mice in all those years!!! Try it....it works!

The problem with mothballs is you've got to kill hundreds of them for enough mothballs to do any good. Besides, they're soooo tiny. :)

I like the piece of cheese/ lawn chair/ beverage/ .410 method.
Tried moth balls but found them hard to get. The mothes weren't cooperative at all ::)

Spearmint oil that cooks use works good and dont have that bad smell that moth balls leave for months after you use them.
-
Don't know how your shanty cover is attatched but I take mine off and store it in a Tupperware type container.
-
Don't know maybe you could get an answer back @ ice shanty. I'm always forgeting which site I'm on, need two puters I guess.

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

We are always worried about using mothballs and rat poison for fear the birddogs or kids will accidentally injest the stuff.
In the RV circles we travel in, we learned that dryer sheets work to defend against rodents.
We have been using them in our RV and they really do work. No rodent problems at all (knock on wood)!
Just put them in cupboards, on the floor in corners, in drawers, in the registers, oven, microwave, furnace, around plumbing, etc. Basically anyplace you think a mouse might like to nest in or enter your shanty from.

Thanks guys and gals for your in-put on this subject. Maybe I should come up with a new product made up of mothballs, spearmint, and Bounty dryer sheets. Market it under the name "Mouse-a-Way". LOL Thanks again.

I keep my trap pro in the basement in the summer and haven't had any problems with the vermin bugging it.
-
Definately moth balls. Put in a small butter cup first.
-
I take my tent off my frabil ranger and put it in a plastic airtight contianer. I put the contianer in the sled and put the sled in the basement. I have never had any problems and mice don't typically eat plastic from the sleds. It has worked this far.

dryer sheet DO work. they are great actully. mice cant stand the smell and wont eat it.
-
Yep, use a couple of dryer sheets. Never had a problem since. Makes things smell purdy too.
-
Get yourself a cat and place its food bowl near the shanty. The cat will be in that area often to take care of the mice if they are around.
-
Poison will work the best, just keep it stocked up and you wont have any problems

That's hilarious!! Seriously, moth balls, dryer sheets, liquid lysol and chewing tobacco all work to keep the nasty beasts out.

Yep! Any kind will work but, the leafy kind is easier to clean up if you spill it. They won't come near the stuff. Makes me really wonder about my bad habits ???.
