tried to get out for some early spring perch fishing on erie but after only a short time out on the lake the winds picked up and waves started crashing over the bow so we quit and headed back to shore seeing how the lake temp was 40 degrees and no other boats were out in our area( 1.5 miles frrom shore ) to rescue us in case we needed rescueing. we did get into a few bass and my brother pulled up a slob 15+ inch perch

got out for some crappie (calico) fishing today with my son and brother and had one of best days ever landing over 200 fish between the 3 of us.
we decided to check out one of the bays not far from the launch and lucked into a big school while drifting the shallow flats-had the whole place to ourselves until a boat passing by seen us pulling in some nice slabs, within an hour there were close to 15 boats fishing around us but everyone kept their distance so it wasn't too bad..
we ended up catching over 200 and keeping 75 crappie mostly 10-13.75 inchers with a few 9.5 's thrown in.
got enough fillets to last a while hopefully we can get in another steelhead trip if the creek clears up a bit ;D.
my brother with a nice white crappie

was able to talk my brother into taking 10 of ours-that still leaves me with 40 to fillet----have to teach the kid how to clean fish one of these days

took advantage of my 4 day weekend and got out with the boy for a few hours of catch&release steelhead fishing on the big creek. the numbers of returning fish are a bit down this year but we still managed to hookup with a few good size fish and about 16 jacks in the 16-18 inch range, not bad for a few hours but nothing compared to 30-40 fish days of the last few years.
-----------------------------------------------------------
another jack- caught 5 or 6 before the kid hooked up with his first fish of the afternoon

the kid finaly hooked into something- the fish went nuts jumping repeatedly and held out for 10 min before the kid beached it.

got out on for a little crappie fishing today.didn't expect to catch another 200 plus again today but figured the fishing should be pretty good at least with the dark skies and rain this morning. ended up being a slow day -had to move around a lot to find the smaller active schools in the bay.out of the 80 crappie we caught only 20 were keepers in the 9.25 to 11 inch range -recent cold front must have slowed things down a bit.
found a couple

got out with my son for another afternoon of catfishing.was a bit slower than last time we were out but we still had a blast landing 14 out of the 20 cats we hooked.
the kid landed the big fish of the day a chunky 32.5 incher but i accidentally deleted that fish and a few others

didn't order anything yet-prices seem fair
tried rigging up some bleacher seats with rope -didn't work out so good- too stiff.got to talk the wife into letting me get the pair for $34 each that fit the moulded plastic seats
-
Big Cat Safari!!! WTG! Those channel cats look great.

Nice. The canoe looks good strapped onto the ole Grand Marquis ;D How's your back feeling these days ;) Believe it or not I sat in my canoe for everyday for 4 days last weekend and I think I actually got used to it. After you've been sitting in it for a few hours and then you try and stand up it takes a few minutes for your spine to straighten up. Canoes are fun but they sure aren't comfortable
4 days strait - i couldn't handle that ;) need a day to recover before heading out again.i thought maybe i'm just gettin old but the kid's just as sore. we fished 6 hrs without a break-have to try and force myself to take some stretch breaks but then i might miss the big one ;)

i paddle to shore once n a while to streach my legs n take a leak so i dont get all cramped up, atleast you can stad in your canoe

Got out with the kid for another day of catfishing fun.The fishing slowed quite a bit, only manged 13 cats in a full days fishing but a least we landed 3 real good ones over 30 inches and 5 in the 5-9 lb range + a few little guys. no pics- my memory stick froze up and now my pics are stuck there -i'll never buy another sony digital camera >:(
got the last couple of fish on the built in memory space on the cam.

went out lake Erie today with my son and brother to try our hand at a little walleye trolling. We only landed 5 eyes ,1 brown trout and a few bass -I guess we should be lucky we caught any seeing it was our first time using a downrigger and dipsy divers.had a lot of tangled lines and frustration before we finally figured things out :P .one of the walleyes we dragged around the lake for some time,it was just about dead when we reeled in to check the lines -release set too tight.
my brother with the first fish -a chunky brown-had all the lines tangled

the kid with his first ever walleye - his 2nd was a tasty 18 incher

my second walleye of the day-1st was an 18 incher i dragged in dead off a dipsy

your bound to catch a few fish when you put as much time in as we do on the water- 9+ hours last sunday ;)
walleyes that size are pretty common on Erie -thats not even a big one -I'll have to try upgrade with a 30+ incher next time out
-
i think i'm ready to give up on the walleye trolling. had only a half day to fish today but i figured we'd limit out on big walleyes in a couple hours after hearing and reading numerous reports of huge schools and limit catches of big walleye stacked up 18-20 miles east of where we fished last week.got out on the lake just as the sun was comming up over the horizon -the day started out good- i got the first walleye , a good eatin size 17.5 incher ;D-went another 3 hours :( or so before my brother and son caught their only fish 5 minutes apart 18 & 20 inchers .4 hours of riding the waves for 3 fish :-\ -think i'm ready to give up on the walleye trolling -until next time ;)

some more tasty walleyes, WTG 8)

i think i'm ready to give up on the walleye trolling.
Nice fish. I'm happy any time I get any walleyes, but I have to agree, trolling does get tough after a while. I've given up on trolling and just jig, even though trolling is by far the most productive method for our lakes.
-
I dont know how you even got out there this weekend. I made two attempts late morning (i know......first mistake) and couldnt get more than 100 yards out of the south gap and i almost put the bow under lol
-
Nice mix of fish wny! Those walleye look yummy ;)

i prefer jigging any day.at least you can use light tackle and get some kind of a fight out the fish. trolling with 14 lb test or more feels like your dragging in a piece of driftwood except for an occasional head shake.
tough to jig out on Erie -miles of water and the fish are suspended anywhere from 5ft off bottom to 20 feet below the surface .

early morning wasn't bad but by the time we left the waves were gettin pretty high,
we were gettin pretty wet from the whitecaps -don't think a 17 ft sylvan shallow v sport troller is made for the great lakes :P
Not too bad of a morning. You guys need some downriggers and planer boards, then you can pull 6 lines and really catch em or really get tangled up :D

3 walleye in 4 hrs - we should have gone bass fishing ;)
we ran 2 lines off a downrigger and one off a dipsy-we still did better than some of the guys we talked to with the planer boards and 4 downriggers.
-
caught just enough for a few Mcwalleye fillet o fish sandwiches
:rotflol: :rotflol:
Nice fish!!
-
Sweet walleyes guys. Small boat trolling on the big lake sounds like an adventure.
-
i don't know why but i let my brother talk me into trolling for walleyes again :-\. at least i didn't have to set the alarm for 4am this time ::).
fished a little over 4 hours and left with one fish a piece landed.we were off to a good start with 3 fish landed in the first hour but after that hooked and lost one other in the next 3 hrs.we got back to the launch and checked out the fish cleaning station-other guys had only a couple fish some only one then some charter captain shows up with 16 hog walleyes and 2 lake trout-i was almost tempted to book a trip to try and learn somthin after seeing all those big ones till i found out its 500 bucks for an 8 hr trip for 4 guys-thats a little over 30 bucks a fish :P
my brother won the coin flip for first fish a decent 27 incher

i had 2nd a eatin size 23"

the kid got the 3rd and final 24 incher

my brother was up next at bat but lost an 18 incher -i think we lost it on purpose so
he could be next for a larger fish but that never happened ;)
kept them on ice and filleted and fried em up for dinner -man were they good

-
Nice job, WNY. They are definitely out there!
What are you guys trolling for baits? (If you don't mind...)
-
thanks guys
keeping them on ice and cookin them fresh makes a big difference -best tastin eyes i ever ate.

we were trolling black &purple+watermelon willow leaf worm harnesses off the bigger dipsy divers down 35-50 ft on 2 rods and renoskys blue/silver on 2 rods off downrigger at 75-55 ft down.
got one on a renosky stickbait and hooked 3 on the purple harnesses + 4 or 5 ripped off worms-got to put a 3rd stinger hook on i guess.
their definitely out there- its just a matter of finding the bigger schools - charter boat had 16 eyes most were 27" or better with 6 over 30" -one had to be 33-34 inches
