I'm trying to figure out the deal with the trout along the bird island pier in the river... not many people fishing there this time of year, so anyone have any tips?

Yep 100% All kinds of things come out and to that area. Can be awesome fishing for one of the most unique bodies of water in the world.
I personally don't fish it from shore, but knew a bait shop owner and his wife on Niagara.
Don't under estimate what you will catch or who you run into.
Be safe as well with getting down the Bird island pier and along the blackrock canal, the footing can be slippery and the Niagara is ALWAYS unforgiving.
The fishing can be OUTSTANDING, just be mindful of the environment and your surrounding.
Fish the current breaks of the river and hang on if your hook something, your fighting the fish and the river as well.
Internet heros give it a rest!
