Spring Walleye Lures - NY
« on: Mar 06, 2024, 02:57 PM »
Ice fishing season is over for me and I am looking to do some walleye fishing before the season closes?

Curious as to what everyone's go to baits for the pre spawn walleye bite?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

I primarily fish for walleye in the Schuylerville section of the Hudson. The water is a bit cold at the moment, but my most productive hard bait in the spring is a 1/2 oz Rat-L-Trap in red craw. My second is a 1/2 chatterbait in red craw with a red Hog Farmer Spunk Shad. I fish both as slow as I can, just fast enough to feel the bait functioning properly. As you can probably tell, red is my most productive spring color. Both also work well on small mouth and the occasional toothy critter.

Good to know! You are not far from me at all! I live in Wilton and like your bait of choice.
I have been doing decent (1 or 2 per trip) on Saratoga Lake since "Ice out" with Rat L traps and jerk baits, but thought I'd see if there
are any other bait recommendations for walleye that might be more efficient.

I used to fish behind the Post office in Schuylerville, when I was younger but haven't fished it in years.
I still occasionally fish near Lock 5.

Thanks for the update.

I grew up in Wilton on Traver Rd, small world pal! Good luck out there!
