I don't know how many of you are aware of this but it's gonna make things pretty tough on all of us that use minnows for bait and trap your own whether it's for icefishing or open water.....Check this out.....

I'll try again...http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fhregs.html
Well anyway...seeing as how I'm not computer smart enough to put the link up there for you to click on....Go to the NYSDEC site and read the new regs. concerning the spread of VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia) that the DEC has just implemented. It's going to make things real tough on Bait collectors, Dealers, and on us fishermen.....WK

Here is another anti gun proposal from our wonderful state Assembly. You guys need to call your State Senators and tell them to vote no when these 3 new bills come up for a vote.. Here is a web site of our state senators , find your district and send him an email about these three bills.
http://www.nysenate.gov/nyss_senator_search/Your%20Street%20Address%2C145880 (http://www.nysenate.gov/nyss_senator_search/Your%20Street%20Address%2C145880)
The 3 bills in question are : A01326, A01093, A00801A. If you guys don't say anything then it will be passed !! You need to contact your State Senator today or risk having the Government take away more of your rights.

thank you for the reply it was very helpful. It answered a few questions i had, however i think i didnt word my question right. As far as life jackets, horn and or whissel, flares ect. what do i need on a 15' boat with a motor? Not sure what i need and/or dont need for the size of the boat. Do the rules change with the size of a boat? Im just repeating things ive heard. Thanks again for your help

http://www.uscgboating.org/SAFETY/fedreqs/equipment.htm (http://www.uscgboating.org/SAFETY/fedreqs/equipment.htm)
Basically...
- One PFD/life jacket for each person on board
- One "throwable" floatation device
- Three flares
- Horn
- Fire extinguisher
- Lights (red/green on bow, white on stern) when operating after sunset
- At least one oar
I also carry...
- GPS
- navigational charts for wherever I'm boating (or get the paper chart from any boat place)... you can also get these online for free from NOAA. Maptech Chart Navigator Viewer is a free program to view free downloadable RNC charts from NOAA (the digital version of the paper charts) and does a very nice job
- VHF marine walkie talkie (leave on Ch 16 - never know when you (or someone else)) may need it
- Cell phone
- Common sense
- Enough fuel to get me back with some reserve - check tanks before leaving and know your gallon per hour burn rate
- Anchor with 100' of line
There are some exceptions for boats under 16', but why risk it? If you don't know, ask. The stupid question is the one you don't ask. Conditions can change out there quickly and it can get nasty out there on Oneida Lake in just a few minutes. So be sure you check the weather before heading out (i.e., www.weather.gov - NOAA weather radio on the marine VHF walkie talkie, etc...)
-
you also need anchor rope and tow rope
i just take the boats down to the US Coast Guard station and have them inspected ever year it's free and they have all kinds of information and are always a helpful bunch of guys....
type of flairs depend on size of boat
you may also want to check your county sheriffs dept as fed state and county have a few changes and you want to meet all standards...... i know for fact one of which was length of my anchor rope

...flares aren't required under 16' boat, but if you're going to be on anything bigger than a small lake, pond or bay, it's a good idea to have them. One thing to know about flares - they have expiration dates. Check them regularly so that two things don't happen 1) the don't work when you need them, and 2) you don't get a ticket for expired flares.
The Coast Guard safety inspections that you can get done before even launching your boat are a great thing. They let you know what you need to be safe and to avoid getting ticketed.
-
good suggestion on getting the boat inspected ahead of time...I haven't been stopped on the niagara yet, but if its going to happen, its sure to happen there. ::) I haven't checked on details in a few years...my flares are probably up

CALL THE NYSDEC AND ASK! (http://www.dec.ny.gov/about/558.html#region5)
Then you'll get a good answer. I always email them if I have a question. That way I have an answer I can keep a record of. For example, I asked if a photo copy of my license on my iPhone was acceptable to present to an officer and was told yes. I buy mine online so I can only print a copy. They don't send you one.
So now I have my license and e email on my phone if there's ever any question.
Ain't technology grand ;D

Well said Rg. But i wanted to point out that for some reason this year, the state mailed me a license after i printed a copy from my online purchase. I actually laminate of full sheet of licenses, and keep one in the truck, wallet, ice fishing gear, tackle box, etc. Now i keep the one the state mailed me in my wallet and have the laminated copies still in their respective locations
