Title: THE BIG D.
Post by: wiredstone on Mar 06, 2010, 03:04 PM
Took a ride up old mine road. Boat launch needs a little more warm weather. Looking good.

If you want to hook up some time , I would be glad to go. It is slow moving 8 to 30' of water. Great for any boat or canoe.

Thanks for the report and pics.  Do you float trip it with the canoe or is it slow enough to paddle upstream?  Thanks

I have paddled up stream about 1/2 mile in a canoe by myself from the bushkill launch.

Water is rising fast. Fished from shore , but forgot my boots. My little island I stood on sunk fast. Boats are out but no fish. Lots of debris in the water.

ooo You are fishin for eyes in my spot, haha luckily Im usaully the only shore guy there this time of year. That is one of the better areas for eyes all year, but there are some others which I will obviously not divulge. Nice pics I need to get some of mine scanned and on here, will be funny having pics of eyes from the same place.
Title: Re: THE BIG D.
Post by: Locnar on Mar 25, 2010, 07:03 PM
Luckily Im all Catch and release except for stockie trout and perch during hardwater. My biggest eye from there was around 8 lb 26". Ya Late Fall/Early Winter and the Pre Spawn can be red hot then you get the post spawn and it becomes problematic. Smaller jigs tipped with fatheads can be killer when they turn off and I dont even do well post spawn, some of the old timers got the small tipped jig thing down, Im still getting the hang of it. When you fish from shore unfortunately you are forced into using much bigger jigs, unless you get a nice flood and a certain creek creating clean water/muddy water color line and I score bigtime then. Wow I just gave away Big Ds walleye secret for this time of year, but then again anyone can go read a few articles in an In fishermen and figure it all out anyway. Good luck to all on Big D it can be really good if you figure it out, and please catch and release as much as possible, eyes dont get 8 lb+ without C&R.

Fished the delaware yesterday, caught 4 smallies on jerk baits... had a bunch of other hits and follows as well.  Also had a muskie hit near the shore but didnt catch him.  Water was still pretty high but the color is good

hey mark ,thanks for the info.i thought all the talk was about the delaware river.listen i heard i have to get a launch permit for my kayake, what is that?and is that for any area in pa? ??? and is the delaware slow enough somewhere to use a kayake and thats productive?appreciate any info
Title: Re: THE BIG D.
Post by: Locnar on Apr 06, 2010, 05:16 PM
The section between Milford and Shawnee, sounds huge and it is, but there are so many productive slots in there. No shortage of smallies if you are good at reading the water and its pockets. Many riffle run situations for summer eyes as well, just be on the water a alot and you will find out.

At the end of Foul Rift there is a very nice area, especially during low water for wading. The only trick is finding access, on the Jersey side there is a nice place to park right near where Foul Rift dumps in, it is a money spot for multiple species. I dont mind giving this spot out as it isnt fished much if the water isnt low and wadable. One of my honey holes, but good luck getting to it. If you wanna see a true shad funnel for the shore guy here is your spot, catch and release please, big smalies in the area and they dont get 6 lbs by being eaten by us, and believe me if you dont think 6 lb smallies live in the river all over then think again and change your tactics, I have a certain European technique that owns smallies on the river, but Im not telling that much.

Foul Rift is right near Belvidere and is many miles away from the Milford-Shawnee region, which has very little in the way of dangerous rapids

Post by: crafty on Apr 07, 2010, 03:41 PM
thanks for the info locnar.i didnt want you to put your spot out there like that if its a good one for ya,but i appreciate anyways.im always catch & release so dont worry about seeing them disappear.i just love paddling on the water and catching any kind of fish and just taking pics.but anyways how do you fish the river?do you have a canoe or kayake?cause im going to be going alot this summer so i can find out where to fish and what to throw at them that will make them go crazy.

Theres not a stretch of the river that doesn't have them now a days  ;) ;)   They are slowly taking it over, atleast the smaller resident fish that never seem to grow are  :-\ :-\   Just fish any deeper pool or the confluence of any trout stream and you'll get into them. Most will be in the 12-20" range but theres a some fish up to and over 20#s mixed in

They must of swam right past my spot on the river.  I have been there twice another couple of guys have been there a few times and no one has seen or caught any stripers.  First year that this has happened  to us.  stripers have been caaught below and above but not there.

the hole has turned into a big sand flat that is choked full of weeds now.  there is a cold water release every week also.

I believe there is a pay launch just down river from the bridge...as to the toll, my buddy works the toll booth, haven't paid to cross that bridge in years  ;D ;D

Once walleye season closes I'll start putting time in on the D again...in the meantime, I'm too sick to be out on the ice so I'm making up a buncha shad spoons...its almost that time of year  ;D ;D

Last year most of our ice was gone by then too  ;) ;)   Personally I prefer fishing for them once they make it to some of the tribs...I love p*ssing off the trout bums when I hook a shad and actually have to fight it to land it instead of just winching it in like 1 of those 10" stockies  ;D ;D

Hard to argue with that  ;D ;D  and the walleye fishing can be amazing if you put your time in and learn where they tend to stack up  ;D

From I believe I84 down its open all year...3 fish @ 18"   If she doesn't get too muddied up, from now until they start spawning in early April are great times to fish for them (I do best on jigs this time of year until the water temps hit the mid 40s, then its jigs and stickbaits/ crankbaits)...it usually slows way down for me come early April until the end of the month (it varies on water temps) and then picks up again after they are done spawning

We've been picking at them through the ice on the river all winter although this year was pretty slow compared to years past. Still marked plenty so I know there's plenty of them still there but much fewer biters  :-\   Guess that means more for me to go put in the boat instead  ;D

Early season walleye is perhaps the most difficult fishing to be done in the river, during spawn and directly after when its cold and the water is high can be frustrating at best, thank god for early season shad. I do tend to catch some monster smallies right after ice out, caught one of my biggest ever early in the season on a shrimp from my lo mein I ate while parked looking at the water.

Got down to the river again today to do some fishing.  Ended up catching one 16 inch walleye.  Had a big (probably around 25 inches) eye follow right to shore and go after my lure right next to my feet, when he turned to swim away half of his body was actually out of the water on shore.  Had another smaller eye follow right to shore and a big smallie at the same spot.  Caught a beautiful 3 lb smallie toward the end.  Only fished for around 2 hours.

That water color and the wind has me inside reading today, water color is bad enough without the wind gusts ruining any chance at a decent drift.

the river looked good today when i drove through narrowsburg today.  there was two guys fishing from the bank on the PA side boat launch.  dont know what they were catching if anything.

if the shad are not up yet Im sure they will be by the end of next week.  four days in the 70's with it staying about average after that.

Don't have my camera card reader for my lap top yet. I went out and took pics this morning. She went from 100cfm to4600cfm over night. Saw 50' trees coming down river.  :o   The big D will be up tomorrow.

Its a safe bet...she was ripping at 127,000cfs (Belvidere gauge)   :o :o    With any luck the fallen trees on 1 of my favorite walleye stretches will have gotten blown out...I musta lost $30 worth of jigs on em this year  :-\

Dmntd, thanks for the good pictures! Those trees may be gone from your spot but there will be new jams of debris we will have to deal with! I'll have to be careful running the boat when she goes down. A new adventure after every flood!  Mark

It'll be a learning experience all over again. Thats exactly why I love fishing rivers though, just when you think you have em figured out they change and you start all over again  ;D

Tried to get after some walleyes today on the Delaware near the water gap.  Had one walleye on but lost him.  Only fish I caught was a big old brown trout. 21.5 inches and thick.  Real good fight, i thought it was gonna be an eye cause he was staying down and i finally saw the long profile but then got it to shore and was surprised to see spots.

I'd put $$$ on them already being in the river, not in huge numbers but the early run fish should be there  ;)   with water temps still in the low 40s very few will be willing to hit though

the shad should be around somewhere.  i saw somerwhere that the water temps are in the upper 40's and low 50's.

thats shad temps.  Ill let you all kno what i see when i drive over the river on wed.  might give it a whirl if i see any boats or shore guys.

Big D Shad SpotBURN??? Question:

A few years ago I used to try for shad near Water Gap - just down the road near the Portland Power Plant.. old railroad trestle.

There were several pull-off parking spots .

Is it still in LOCK-DOWN status to keep Fishing-Pole Wielding Terrorisrs away??

any info wouldbe appreciated.

I've never been hassled back there but I've only fished that area for 2 or 3 years now and usually stay back towards the old trestle rather than walk up towards the outflow from the power plant

a buddy of mine was hitting quite a few shad down in Lambertsville early last week so that should put some up near Easton by now...whether or not its in fishable #s I couldn't say though

Was on the river last night on the boat fishing for bass before dark and then did some cat fishing.  Missed a big walleye right away, followed the bait right to the boat and short striked it.  Then lost a smallie and another eye and had a few other hits.  Caught two nice perch only.  Just before dark started cat fishing but couldnt find them, lost one but only landed 2 eels.  On the way out heard a lot of stripers breaking water and ended up watching a few of them nail my bait but never hooked any of them.  As we were pulling the boat out around 11 pm, coyotes started howling like crazy on the Jersey side of the river which was neat.  All in all didnt land much but had a lot of action, river is way low, hit bottom on a few spots i never even came close before

River is at normal flow and is murky. Gold and chartruse seem to be the ticket. I was using a green and white shad dart with a yellow and silver flutter spoon. Guys with gold where doing a little better. Shad are all over the river right now. Water temp is in the low 50's

I was out on thursday evening and the river was running a littl higher than normal and had about two foot or less visibility.  I was up beteen NY and PA.  there was a rediculous hatch comming off and everything was active.  My first cast with a green n chartruse dart produced a buck an then about five minutes later i got a roe on the same dart.  for the rest of the night it was steady swing and misses.  I never even had to run a spoon.  we seen several shad coming up and surfacing right in front of us.

I think I probably had a dozen or so bites and hooked 4 and lost 2 in about 2 hours.

good day to be out not to hot and not to cold and the fish were biting.

Im glad the river came down a little bit .  I wish it would clear up a little bit.

We got out April 15th and landed 6 big Roe. We were 6-10 and also landed a nice smalley. All were on darts or f spoons, color didn't matter. We fished above the Belvidere launch. Once we marked fish and anchored it was game on for a pretty steady 3 hrs of action while still trolling (sitting still).

Sometimes you can get them on anything other times they are picky. I ran into some guys coming back from where I was and they said it was slow. They where using gold.
I went down there with silver and smashed them. You never know. They are a great fighting fish for sure. Good practice for steelie season from shore. ;D This rain should move them around .

Yes they sure can be picky...i had real good days using a black/white dart...the old "skunk" dart we called it. It would outfish everything else sometimes.

wired are you still fishing down around whre you have been fishing?  Or have you ventured north.  I was thinking of going to the Zane grey fishing access to take my old man out for some shad.  was really hoping to get him some shad.  Our other option is going to milford ad fishing there.

thanks for the info in advance. we're going out in the morning.

They should be up there. And yes I was in the same area. An old timer told me ,he gets them there until mid june. Seeing more dead ones and sea lice now. Still some fresh fish to fight. They are up at the tri-state marker, but not like down here.  ::) I might take a ride up today. ;)

Fishgalore and I went out for shad and walleyes today. No waleye but the shad liked my swim bait. Went 10 for 12 on shad. Slowing down ,but still plenty of shad in the river.

Wired smoked me this past outing he caught lots more than I. I went 1-2 on shad and 0-0 on anything else. The plan was to fish for Walleye. I tried just about everything except to fish at night on the Big D even though we went at the break of day and were the 1st on the water near our location.

Fished overnight for Walleye and Hybrids on Lake Hopatcong Saturday into Sunday. Mike had 2 Hybrids on, one to the boat (I saw it then it bee lined for weeds where it shook the hook. It was about 5-6 lbs) and the other broke him off and took the Zara Spook. There was plenty of top water noise we just weren't on 'em. Another bud lost a 30" Waldo at the boat the same night, same lake.

Mike & I switched to smaller fish along the shore in the am and hammered, Crappie (White & Black), Perch, Sunfish, a couple LM Bass, one tiny Smallie and a few Rock Bass.  Lots of fun for about 3 hrs.

2 weeks ago I ran into a large pod of hungry shad well north of Callicoon. Last weekend a buddy got a few also. Always hit and miss for us up north. I havnt been on the river like normal though this year... The walleye action has been decent and the troutin has been real good...  8)

floated from Poxono and the Water Gap this morning with 2 buddies....its ridiculous the number of shad in the river....I think we went maybe 3 minutes without having 1 under the yaks and in many spots we saw 40 or 50 schooled up like bunker but none of us brought any shad gear figuring they'd be few and far between  :-\

did manage a half dozen eyes between us with only 1 keeper and a few smallies, rockbass, fallfish, and a channel cat

we had them chasing bomber long a's and a few very short hook-ups but that was it...if we were actually rigged for em I'm sure my shoulder would be sore from fighting fish and not just paddling  :D

reminded me of bonefish...just fins/ tails swimming around in the shallows  ;D

Kayaked a section of the big D today with a group, nice day to be on the water but lots of others on the river as well.  Did catch 7 smallies and a few rock bass.  Between the group we probably got 30 smallies and we didnt fish hard, just mainly floated and hung out.   All mine were on top water

Worked great, still getting used to the jet. Saw lots of eagles, a black bear and a y-buck in velvet. Caught 2 smallies and a fall fish
just screwin around. Great day for a float.

in 6-8 inches of water. Had a long shaft 20 Merc tiller on it before, was stuck in the pool I launched in. This motor lets me draft about 3 inches.

"I wonder if they will stop the city people from having picinics there. Last year was nuts there. I heard milford will be shut down too. "

Wiredstone, according to the Pocono Record the gates will be closed leading to the parking area. Specifically they don't want picnics because of all the garbage and associated clean up and hauling costs. This is a bunch of BS. Federal budget cuts because our a-hole legislators cant wipe their own a$$es. On the other hand the Park is spending $300,000 to replace wood road signs with metal ones along river road.  :cookoo:
The Gov. sucks.

Jiggerman you get them from shore or boat? Dart or flutterspoon? I have a place not far from there in N.Y. and will be up there the first couple of days of May to hunt gobblers. Have never fished for the shad there but always wanted to take a whack at them. When I first started going up that way in 1994, the Lackawaxen fireman or some group used to have a shad festival? I don't know why they stopped it but I do remember seeing signs for it.
Title: Re: THE BIG D.
Post by: JiggerMan on Apr 21, 2013, 10:21 AM
Icebum,

Both Shad were on darts.  the first was a black head/ orange body/ white tail  and the other was green head/ chartruse body/ white tail.   I had flutter spoon tied behind both darts and the shad still hit the darts.   the river was kind of up a little with the rain last the other night but it was fishable.    the shad i caught were hugging the shore line.  and hit while reeling as slow as you could without losing your darts to the bottom.

Thanks it is one of those things I always want to get to doin but other stuff gets in the way. Like the crappie and bluegills and bullheads and, well you get the picture. Zane grey is a short drive from my place in N.Y. It's at Highland lake, spend a ton of time up that way. It is hard to believe I haven't fished for those shad yet.

your still getting some down that way are ya.   are there still a bunch moving through yet.

they are starting to spawn farther up river already.  I went out last night and got one roe that was still tight and got one walleye on a flutter spoon and also got one small mouth.  the water was pretty dirty probably visibility of about a foot but it was going down .  I managed to find a feeder stream that was pushing some clearer water out and that was where i got the one roe to save me from getting the shad skunk.

orange and black dart was the shad getter .

WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO WITH THE SHAD YOU CATCH?
Title: Re: THE BIG D.
Post by: JiggerMan on May 12, 2013, 07:01 AM
I only have kept two this year.  they were both roe shad.  I give the eggs to a buddies wife to eat and then I take the shad and get two nice fillets off of it and scale it and cut it up for catfish and striper bait.

I only keep a couple a year everything else is CPR.

every trib seems to have some swimming around too...mostly schoolies (15-24" fish) but every so often a fish ya can't turn shows up  ;D   now if it'd only stop pouring long enough for them to come back down to fishable levels again  :-\

your river trip might have to wait a couple days.  drove over the river in port jervis today and its a raging mess of chocolate milk.

On a positive note a have heard of shad being caught north of Dingmans ferry.........  only one though so I would not get your hopes up.  it will be at least a couple of weeks yet till there is fishable numbers.

catfish might be biting and the carp also.

Was out this afternoon. Started at Worthington , then Poxono. Nothing there. Went up above Bushkill and found a few nice bucks. They did good this morning up under 84 but shut down at 1:00. Water is still high for wading but you can still fish it. Found them holding in the mudlines :thumbup_smilie: Not many guys out today. Only saw 2 boats all day

Hey guys, don't let Jim kid you. He had a bigger one the week before! It was not as heavy, but 1" longer.
Now if only I could get him to stop interrupting my walleye fishing to take pictures of his muskies!
