I love fishing the canal, we fish it a ton. This year it is lower in Western NY than I have seen it in a long time. It's crazy!
-
so was the canal system here ......still did good on perch
-
Little low here but not bad compared to the great lakes. Caught less perch but bigger size than normal. Walleye were all small, more tiny pike than ever before and not one crappie yet. Still early. Can't wait to hit the catfish or walleye this summer. This year I'm going to spend a day trying to get a musky out of there. I've lost a few at the boat on non musky gear so hopefully I get 1 this year.
-
Pike were stacked up at the lock this morning. Schools of shad and small perch were huge. Every now and again I could watch the pike attack. Pretty cool.
Hope they start filling it soon. Doubt it will be in the next 4 weeks though.

They start filling our end around April 20 every year.
-
Which end is that?

I'm quite sure he is talking about my end Bob.
The gate between the Niagara and Lockport.
-
Gotcha. Heading out to investigate a couple spots in just a bit.

Had a fun morning on he canal. Crappies, bluegills, rock bass, perch and a few bullhead.. stopped by palmyra but the guys were working on the gates opening and closing them and letting water in and out. Something must have been wrong with one of the gates. When they closed it it made some thunderous banging noises.
They had the water stirred up like chocolate milk.

It looks like they are finally starting to fill the canal near Fairport. Amazing that it was that low and nearly dry is some places.
-
I think they did some big repairs to the pittsford lock and that’s why it was so low. They’re also working on the bridge going into pittsford, maybe that had something to do with it. No changes in my sections as yet. In fact, Macedon to palmyra has gone down a couple of feet.

While making my monthly run to my favorite Amish meat market for my cholesterol supply I drove over the canal in Medina. Hardly any water in it.
-
It’s up from the rain near me, but the gates are still open. Don’t know when they fill the western sections. Our sections are filled from the Genesee River....mostly.

-
They closed the gates this morning. Canal,is coming up :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:

Came up a foot or so overnight. It’ll take a week or more to fill. Takes a lot of water to fill it from the pittsford lock to macedon.
Rg
-
And then they have to stock it with some fish
-
Lots of fish in there. No need for stocking. I don’t know where they hang out in winter but they’re always around in the spring and summer.

-
Up another 8” or so this morning. Another couple feel and I can hit some of my spring perch spots. Got some nice sunnies and gills this morning. All returned to get bigger.
When it gets to the point where the water starts flowing through the bypass to the palmyra section it’ll be time to pester the cats.
Rg
-
Were abouts do you guys catch the perch in the canal?
TIA
-
I get them a lot trolling.

He asked “where”, not “how”.
Even though it was misspelled.
😎

Maybe if the spellcheck still worked in this place.
;)

Like I said, they’re all throughout the canal. Just gotta find them.

Up another foot or so. Still coming up slow.
Rg
-
Seems like it came up quite a bit last night. Starts in to fill the bypass. Really low to the East.
Rg
-
Full!
Thursday looks like the maiden voyage.

Upper Hudson/Champlain canal finally filled up. Thinking about launching the boat myself. Was muddy but clarity is better.
-
I’m sticking to shore till it warms up a bit. With my Ranaud’s syndrome my right hand just can’t take it. So, it’s good to be near where I can get warm if need be.
Besides, the shore fishing has been great.

Don’t want to overuse that boat.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
-
Nice try!
Rg

With the higher waters the fish are hugging the shore lines anyway. No casting required! ;D ;D
-
I’m looking at the fly rod for the morning.
Rg
-
Nice try!
Rg
Can’t blame a guy for trying.
;)

Macedon section is still full. Pretty riled up right now. They lowered the section to Palmyra by about 5’. Must be working on the lock or something.

Maiden voyage today. Had some timing issues with the outboard last fall. Made some adjustments to the throttle linkages and seems to have resolved the problem. Ran like a champ this morning.
Even caught some fish although, the water was pretty murky. Couple other boats out. I’m sure that will pick up. When the cruisers start moving, I’ll head to the streams.
Looks like the downstream side is coming back up.

OK.
Got the once a year boat ride completed.
Time to winterize it for next season.

It rained Monday.
Does that count?

We have been out in it.
Tomorrow I finish the last few things and Saturday we are taking it out fishing in Lake Ontario.

Very cool. I like that boat. Catch them up!

So....the canal is drained from Macedon to Palmyra. There was a major blowout where Ganargua Creek meets the aqueduct at lock 29. They’d going to have to do a lot of work to fix it I think.
Still full in Macedon though.

Downstream side came up a bit overnight. Might take a ride to see how they’re doing on the repairs.

I was getting ready to fish yesterday and they decided to flush the lock.

Needless to say, I didn’t fish there. They must still be working on the washout at Palmyra. Water goes up then it goes back down.
