it's easier to see them with a few war wounds and white  fins   

seriously  watch  when you handle a  fish if it has a  hook  from  a previous battle  you  can  get a  nasty wound ......lot of guys   just grab their  leaders and  break salmon off leaving the hook in a fishes  side ...... be careful have  fun

  Yes be careful about those hooks , I use to clean fish in the fall and been hooked a few times , far as landing use a cheap wool glove , you can tail salmon and trout , you just need a firm grip little practice works great

when their good  and white  they are at their peak!  as a culinary expert I learned a  simple fish soup  !  snag a  couple  half white  salmon  ....the ones  that  can hardly swim are  best   i'll explain why later ....  get a  big  pot    now rip a  couple of the  nastiest salmon you can  find ...... hold them over the  pot  and  wring them out like a wash cloth ......this is  why you want the ones that  don't move  much  less  fighting .... when your stock pot is  about half  full throw  in  some   taters and  sliced carrots   maybe  some  spinach and garlic  as well  ... heat  to a  boil then  just simmer and watch the  buzzards  line up in your trees.....nothing like a  good healthy  dinner supplied  by mother nature    cold  weather and  wrung out zombie salmon  soup... just a  Pulaski tradition

pictured  here  is a prime  example of one  just nearing the "ripe  " stage  the  white is  starting to show  well I personal  like  to wait till you have the  well defines  white  strip down the back as  well ....little note   get your  fish before the  gill plates get to bad  you want a  solid place to attach  your drag rope .....I can  tell this fiss is doomed  to be seen on a  Chinese  all you can eat buffet or  be found in a  fish taco
