thinking a few bullheads should show up pretty soon anyone get the itch yet
-
We definitely are. I was talking about bullhead fishing with my dad a couple days ago. We are thinking about going in the next week or so. Might be early but with this warm weather I think they’ll move up soon
-
Too early here. Haven’t heard any peepers yet and no night crawlers.
No matter…still have some in the freezer.
-
Has the hatchery workers put the nets in yet.
-

-
The hatchery workers have not put the nets in yet. I believe they will as soon as the season is closed. Quite a few people fishing scriba creek the last few days.
-

I heard a few last night
-
We got about 70 the last 2 days 10 am - 2 pm on spikes, worms and perch eyes trying to get perch ! Cranberry pond in Greece. They are loaded with yellow parasites. I won't eat them. What a pain in the ..... but fun !
-
Got the itch ? I've broken out in hives ! I can hardly wait but I know it's just a bit early yet. Last year I got into them 4 days after ice out, which was about April 6. This year that happened a week ago but I know the water is much cooler than last year. Hannaford's just had a sale on shrimp so I got bait. I'd like to see about 4 days worth of sunshine & I believe they will be game on. A slow warm rain won't hurt.
-
Saw flock of redwing blackbirds it’s close enough to try
-
i agree ....you should at least get them in ponds now ......i might throw a bulldead rod in tomorrow
-
I haven't bullhead fished in years . Used to go to Beaver Island , but the marina is being rebuilt . Can anyone recommend a spot or 2 for a Niagara Co. guy ? Thanx Keith
-
Come to Indiana. No one targets them here and we have plenty. I always look forward to reading this this thread every spring.
-
Peepers are pretty loud in 3 mile bay.
-

The back bay at Wilson Harbor.
-
theres bullheads out there to be caught ,just saying
-
Also, the pond at the end of 6 mile creek.
There is a campground there (Willow Beach RV Park).
We used to drive in and just fish and nobody bothered us, but that was 10+ years ago.
-
tell them mac said it was ok
-

Right Trap.
-
I heard a few peepers last night which was odd given the temps and being a bit breezy I'm ready to go, just need to register the boat trailer and start the engine. Waiting on the weather
-
I guess it is still mid-March, but this weather isn't doing anything for my plans of a fresh bullhead dinner. With all the warm temps earlier, I had ideas of spending a couple evenings in the boat soaking some baits. Might as well pull a package from the freezer. That's what they're there for.
-
you guys vac u pac those bullheads????
-
Always Trap. I have a good stash from last spring. Might not even bother this year.
-
i have a vac but i think it's on it's way out ....i kept trout perch over a year no problems i'll try some bullheads and see how they do....no walleyes i give them away and bluegills always get eatten :D ....and you have to bullhead fish it's a tradition
-
I doubt very much that I’ll be able to skip it. Maybe I’ll just have a neighborhood fish fry to empty the freezer.
Love the hiss of a Coleman gas lantern.
-
i was at a walmart 6 or 7 years ago ,they had a pallet of coleman duel fuel lanterns for 5 bucks a piece i bought 20 of them....everyone in my family got a new lantern for christmas lol i kept 3 .....bullhead fishing is setting on the lake having coffee with old roy catching a few for dinner and stores of the old days ......he gave me my hunter safety course over 55 years ago....hey can anyone find the bullhead thread from last year and we can see when we all started getting them...i got 3 white bellys from the pond when it was warm
-
Trapp I didn't look back but in my photo library I have a pick from April 10 & 12. Both good catches and really nice nights if I remember correctly and that was only a few days after ice out.
-
At least here in MA they are very active under the ice, so I am surprised you have any "wait" before they start biting...
-
oh you can pick a few but we are waiting for the spring run when they come in the creeks and shallows to spawn and you can catch buckets full....plus we like warmer nights for eatting snacks drinking beer and telling bs stories.............like i said bullhead fishing is tradition
-
I've got to get out for bullheads again. Been too long. My grandkids need to experience the fun of sitting on the river bank at night cooking hot dogs on the fire. As RG said, there is something about the hiss of a Coleman lantern that rounds out the night.
4 or 5 of us would get together a couple times a season for an all nighter fishing an oxbow lake off the Genesee river. We would bring back up to 100 fish. They got put in burlap bags and tossed into a creek behind my buddy's place while we went home to sleep a bit. The next day, we would gather for the cleaning. assembly line style. There was a log there where 1 guy would nail the fish to. The next guy would cut the skin and pull it off with pliers. #3 guy cut the heads off and finished cleaning them. #4 would start the process all over. Working as a team, we could do a pile of fish in no time. We would spilt up the meat to take home but keep a bunch out then fire up the cook pot. We used a beer batter seasoned liberally with finely minced wild onions and hush puppies with onions too. A few frosty cold beers completed the feast.
-
well double shooter i'd bullhead fish with you any time! and i'll even buy the hot dogs :thumbup_smilie:................good memories there now get them grand kids out there and 50 years from now they will be telling stores of hot dogs the river and how grandpa really knew how to bullhead fish ^5...................and thats what it's all about
-

Sometimes I sit back and think...........W T F is Trap trying to say this time?!?!?
Not here.
Super duper advice!!!!
-
When the leeks pop up, then it's time for a bullhead chowder!
-
I like to fillet them and do them blackened on the Weber.
-
Well maybe I'll try that Bob...I've had them every other way and did not like them ...I've tried many times...I like catching them and giving them away
-
Get a good Cajun rub and turn up the heat Ben. Hot….really hot!
-
OK thanks

Here you go Trap! Last years thread.
-
My lake temp dropped about 3* in the last 10 days I need it to go the other way A foot of snow didn't help
-
Definitely getting the bullhead itch. With the recent cold spell there's gonna be some more time to get the tackle ready.
-
Anyone try smoking them? I think I'll give it a go.
-
Nah…too hard to keep them lit.
-
Sorry guys. Not for me. But I do appreciate guys taking their kids or grandkids out. That’s always magical.
-
I'm still a kid at heart
-
Nah…too hard to keep them lit.

-
Killdeers showed up this morning That's a sign of spring for sure Now if winter would just go away
-
You can smoke them whole but be careful. Watch temperature. If you overcook they get mushy.

Funny you mention that - saw my first one of the year yesterday......
-

My uncle smoked bullhead and suckers for a cookout one time. They were ok, but I’m also not a big fan of smoked fish
-
Still waiting on the weather. This week coming doesn't look like anything special, but I've got my fingers crossed for a fair evening. Probably have to wear the ice fishing duds.
-
i know last year i was catching bullheads on this date i have to get the new truck ziebarted today but maybe i can go this afternoon ....last few years i been getting most of my bullhead in the day time
-
i know last year i was catching bullheads on this date i have to get the new truck ziebarted today but maybe i can go this afternoon ....last few years i been getting most of my bullhead in the day time
Thats wild - I had 1 pond that was like that - I could catch them all summer too, they didn't taste muddy either .....in the lake I fish its only from dusk on though......if I could catch them during the day I would fish for them more often
-
I've tried it many times with nothing to show for it except a few dinky sunnies or perch. When I was a boy we caught them from grandma's beaver swamp but they were nasty. Tasted like the mud smells.
I gotta fish in the black ....Maybe during the eclipse ?
-
this is a lake and i catch them in the day time on oneida river as well...... i took the truck in to get ziebart to day so tomorrow i'll hit the lake see what happens ............ small water like beaver ponds you usually white bellys that taste pretty good not sure why yours tasted bad
-

Yeah thats how they were in the pond I fished too - just the right size too -a few big clunkers but mostly medium sized that were fun to bring in as well as eat.
-
That was a loong time ago trapp What I remember best was the older folks telling me and my cousin, DON"T bring any of those things home! Dad liked his fish so I think he had a pretty fair idea of what was edible.
-
For some reason my grandma used to love them - that was the only fish she asked me to catch ....they aren't very high on my list but ......to each their own. Last few years that I went bully fishing the crappie were already biting so no bullheads were caught ....
-

That sounds like a good problem to have
-
I wouldn't mind that being a problem either.
-
bullheads are going not sure what your all waiting for
-
That sounds like a good problem to have
Yep - especially since I would be done fishing by the time I would usually just be starting ;D
-
bullheads are going not sure what your all waiting for
Excellent news - thanks ! I'll probably wait till after this cold spell coming though .....always caught them good in the rain ....a warm rain would be better though ;D
-
Caught those things at south end of conesus lake before in a blizzard
-
Getting poles ready now
I can remember.
fishing them at night
Coleman lantern hissing
peepers talking nothing. better.
Times have changed though.
I now go. during day, warmer
bait was nightcrawlers. or leeches, crabs
used to use big tadpoles., smelt.
But new bait regulations.
put a stop to that,
-
as kids we went and got crawfish ....we called them crabs too and fished with them bullheads loved them big ones we cut the tails off and used them..... old man back when we were young personal liberties and freedom meant more then they seem to today..... remember being taught in school
“We the People” includes all the citizens of the United States of America. The importance of this phrase shows that it wasn't just the framers of the Constitution or the legislators who were given powers to the government. Instead, the government gets all of its powers from the Citizens of the United States of America.
maybe it's time to send these politicians back to school

Don't remind me about the crabs ....one day my buddy and I had crawlers and leeches and caught maybe 3 bully's - 2 docks over 2 guys were fishing crabs under a bobber (never saw that before) and caught so many they had to make a run to get more bait ....we went over there right when they left and nothing - they came back and started killing them again ....LOL
-
when i came home at 9 pm the peepers were peeping and a bull frog was in my road .....45 degrees
-
can't see myself sitting in a boat in this kind of weather Once again, hoping for next week
-
Also, I do good on "Popcorn " shrimp.
cooked type
-
Does anyone still use "Power Lines" when hornpout fishing?
-
no idea what a power line is
-
Nope 6-8 lb yellow mono It shows real well under the lights
-
What’s a hornpout?
I use 8 lb braid for bullhead.
-
What’s a hornpout?
Brown bully
-
Don't know where the term "hornpout" came from. Heard it many times. I like 'Whisker Fish". Weather is looking a little better- any nite now....
-
I had an ex that had a terrible horned pout - she would scare the whiskers off any fish when she was like that ....thats why she is an "ex" .... ;D
-
horned or horny?
;)
-

hahaha - started out horny - moved gradually to horned ....

Got-em All my stars aligned last night with Free time, no chores no obligations, no eclipse, etc etc . it was a great night with star light sky, no wind, no bugs, or boat traffic.
Got 32 of these beauties with most of them caught on shrimp. Crawlers got a few as well as freshwater clams, but the shrimp was killer.

nice!!!! i know you been waiting for them ......black flies are really thick now
-
Nice going 62
-
Nothing like a cooler full of bullhead. Good job!
-

-
Had some for dinner tonight...Delicious will give some to a couple friends so I can go get some more next week after this round of ugly weather passes
-
i wonder if we can tie a frozen shrimp fly for bullhead ????..............62 i officailly declair you king of the mud guzzlers!!!!! good job
-
Frozen shrimp fly, That would something to see.
-
That leads me to wonder, what kind of a mess will I have after trying to fly fish in the dark WHAT !!!??? OMG LOL
Thanks for the title Trapp I really do enjoy catching those buggers Now I'm trying to come up with a source of crayfish since they always have them in their bellies. Just might be one more thing to do... go catch crayfish I do like to experiment with different baits.

long does it take you to clean all of those??
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RjEUSkdks4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RjEUSkdks4)
i do them a little differenp i cut under the back fin slice skin to tall snap shuck ......you can do bullheads pretty fast this way i like cleaning them while fishing have a gut bucket and a cooler with ice ....no mess at home .....
-
I started just running the electric on them and fillet like any other fish.

Thats looks pretty good - I do something similar - just slice the skin all the way around the fish by the head and pull it off with a pair of pliers - then just snap the head off and the rest comes with it ....are bully's bigger than the one in the demo harder to cut that middle fin off ??
-
I started just running the electric on them and fillet like any other fish.
I've done that too - they do fillet pretty well .....
-
I do them like Uoflcards Takes about 2 min / fish The bigger ones I'll fillet after pulling the hide off so that's about 3 min. Under 10" they go whole in the pan. My brother and I brought home 66 one nite. That was a bunch of cleaning.

Yikes - no kidding ....my hands are hurting from from the slices and pokes from the horns and their slime just thinking about it .....I'm usually pretty careful but still get stuck or sliced once or twice - with that many I would be rushing too much and REALLY gotten it........
-
Naah your being too careless If they're bouncing around, a whack on the head with the back of your knife calms them down. Haven't seen a decent sized one yet that I can't tame. It's the little buggers 6-8" that will stick you quick. I don't even like taking the little ones off a hook.
-

Yep - I'm almost ALWAYS too careless when it comes to them.....I usually use a good sized handle from a screw driver for the wacking but I still get stuck - hahaha

Looks like the long arm of the law there
-
Plan on wetting a few lines this evening to see if I can put a few of these tasty whiskered boogers in my bucket.
Might try some shrimp on one rod tonight. If nothing else, I’ll pair shrimp cocktail with a few Busch Lights
-
I may go out for some ...got friends that don't fish but like them muddy things I don't eat them but give them to them
-
Should be a good night weather permitting - the peepers were thick by me the last 2 nights .....always did well in a warm rain....
-
Rain just cleared out here now the wind is blowing like crazy. Not a good fishing nite in my opinion. It could die after dark, but I have an hour drive to fish. I'll wait for a better day.

I weathered the storm. The late wind gusts actually turned the bite on after a slow start. First fish was a delightful surprise, a nice striped fella.

-
Good luck Brad let us know how the tournament goes
Way to go TrapChecker You did well for such difficult conditions. I can deal with (and have) a little rain but the wind always aggravates me. It's hard to keep the boat still and even harder to keep lines still. How did you make out with the shrimp?
I'm hoping for Monday or Tuesday eve.
-
Tight lines to everyone entering the tournament.
I skipped the shrimp, I was going back and forth deciding whether I wanted to even go because of that 9pm gust they were forecasting. The wind wasn’t an issue for me as I was casting from shore.
Was fun hearing the ol’ Coleman lantern humming!
-
Nice kitties.
-
Nice going ATC
-
Wish that tournament wasn't so far away. I just checked out their face book page- looks like a bunch of fun. Good luck to all that participate. Especially the kiddos.

Had another good nite last nite. Absolytely beautiful to be on the lake. 29 Keepers Shrimp did most of the damage. Crawlers worked and clams were a flop. I don't think I'll mess with the clams again. Had 2 big fish with 6" perch in them.

We caught the most fish that were "keepers" there wasn't a single bullhead we thought about throwing back
-
I’d be honored if you named me honorary BIL and let me join you next year for the tournament. Just throwing it out there before the line of applicants get long…

I'll keep you in mind I definitely know where what and how to catch bullhead
-
Got out last nite for a little while. Bite was good on crawlers rite off then the little perch found the banquet and I couldn't keep a bait on the bottom. I switched to all shrimp and did much better. Ended up with 20 good ones and few throw backs.

I might try to get out Saturday night for a few hours I forgot how much fun they can be
-
my problem is there are too many fun fishes to go after. Seems my favorite waters to fish are all different for each species so it is tough to go after 2 or more in one day.
What an awful problem to have !! I guess there is a morning and an evening to each day... Hmmm

There's 24 hours in each day and you are welcome to use all of them
-
are you able to share where the bullhead bite is?

just look for lanterns
-

Got out last nite and did-em again This just seems to be a lucky season so far. Every trip has been dandy with the weather, the conditions, and let's not forget the fish. Got 30 of these guys last nite. Fished only shrimp. Getting a bunch in the freezer so maybe time to focus on some gills.
