Title: sebago fishing
Post by: thedirtydirtyfisherman on Sep 09, 2019, 05:08 PM
been hitting sebago the last few weekends.  Been getting a few fish each time out but seems to always shut off around 10am but been finding them in about 40 ft of water. Togue and salmon.

seems to be the norm this year, theres practically no smelt or alewives and they are feeding on things like small yellow perch, bass etc nearer to the warmer waters on the edges. the togue are skinny and the 18 inch salmon class are 12 inches long, not growing this year

O jeez well that makes sense then, but thats alarming that even the alewives have crashed... could mean the phyto and zooplankton levels have dropped which would be a real bad thing... i really hope we can get this lake back to its somewhat glory

Here are a few from 2 weeks ago
Went out 2 mornings early on water at day break , fishing with sinking fly line and fly rods and sewn on bait, water temp was 75 degrees with a 10 mph SW wind , caught total of 7 salmon 10 Lake trout , over two days smallest salmon was 12 inches biggest was 23 , all other salmon were 18-20 inches the salmon were fairly healthy and full spitting up 2 inch pin smelts , some of the lake trout were a little on the skinny side but some were fat and healthy , biggest Lake trout was 28 inches smallest was 22 inches . I read how terrible the fishing is on Sebago but from my experience it’s still faster fishing than allot of waters in Maine for catch ratios compared to hours fished , as well as size for salmon and lake trout , I am not saying the lake doesn’t have a bait issue but it’s still good fishing if you you put your time in and know where to go on the lake depending on the time of year and the migration of fish
In closing
If everyone kills every legal Lake trout they catch it will help the lake !

The alewives didn't crash, they left when the dam was opened last fall, this is what it looked like anywere within 2 miles of Whites bridge the day they opened the dam, 2 days later it was all gone, I heard lobstermen were filling barrels as fast as they could scoop them out of the Presumscott river.

But they didn't all leave, found this one a few days ago.

I was kind of hoping they were all gone, gotta wonder how much damage they have done to the smelt population, they compete for the same food.

Edit: And you also have to wonder if they feed on the smaller smelt? Seems like way to much of a coincidence, that a year after the alewives leave,  the clouds of pin smelt are back.

I agree with sebagosalmo, since the alewives have left, I've seen some biggish clouds of bait and the salmon I've caught around them have been spitting up pin smelts.

I've cleaned several hundred togue this year and haven't seen any smelt in any of them, lots of perch, bass, and tiny cusk, but no smelt.

had heard about the alewife migration over the dam last year but have never seen a write up or heard a bio talk about it. they should probably open it every fall to dump some, especially if the smelt dont follow.

Glenn I think your right , I think the lake would be better off without the Alewives competing for plankton with the smelts , the Lake trout will suffer but I think the salmon and smelts will benefit in the next few years

Here's a 4 pound native from last year, the second most memorable fish I've  ever caught, hooked up at 180' deep and 2 seconds later it was 4' feet in the air, had 4 other lines in the water and it did 1/2 dozen laps around the boat and made a complete mess of all my gear, it was friggen awesome!!

i think the togue would suffer in the beginning but they would adapt, maybe the size would go down a little but the success of the togue and salmon in the lake i think are a direct reflection of a healthier smelt pop, plus togue control

Glen, that is a beautiful salmon, what a football! 180 ft. Wow... didn't know they occupied such depths...

Did you weigh it to 4 lbs? Or just a guestimate? Looks quite bigger than 4 lbs to me.

Hardest fight i've ever had on a fly rod was from a Sebago salmon, felt like it could take me into my backing (got about half way there) on my 6 wt.

There was actually a bunch of them down there, we caught 4 more that looked just like that one but smaller, it was pretty crazy.

It could have been heavier, my digital scale was broken and my mechanical scale isn't very accurate.

no pics but first descent salmon of the year, needed to get it released quickly as that seasons over. looked to be just over 5 pounds, dark male with hooked jaw.  14 togue in the garden and one slot togue released. whodathunk this in perch would be the lure of choice

what a weird year for lure selection.  i need to tie a few of those streamers before wrecking them, i have that blue hair, looking for the yellow and white.  i did put them in the water, nice action to them
