Title: walleye tackle help!
Post by: pierce1308 on Apr 07, 2014, 09:27 AM
I am thinking of getting into walleyes this season. I have decided on a 7 ft med-lite st Croix rod. would it be better to use 4lb or 6 lb braid? what should I use for a leader ? 8lb fluro is that fine ?

I also use 12 lb mono when using stick baits.the stretch helps keep hooks dug in

Agreed. 10lb superbraid and an 8lb florucarbon leader if the water is crazy clear. The lighter braids are strong enough just seem too small of diameter. Cripes, 10lb Sufix 832 has a 4lb mono diameter! No need for anything thinner unless you are ice fishing!

If your jigging, you need a ultralight to light rod that detects the slightest bite, Braid telegraphs the bite better than any other line, I use 6 lb suffix 832, Walleyes are not line shy. Tye your jigs right on the braid. Favorite jigs Nuckleball jigs by fin-tech, Jigs should be as light as you can go and still stay in contact with the bottom. When Anchored you can use a lighter jig, than when drifting or back trolling.Another trick is to use a stinger hook on those very light bite days. A light to med light rod should be used when casting lures or paddle baits. A med. rod should be used to troll bottom bouncers. I never use anything heaver than 10lb suffix 832.If your drags are set right you will not break any line
